190th Street Subway Station (IND)

Description

190th Street is a station on the IND Eighth Avenue Line of the New York City Subway, served by the A train at all times. It is located on Fort Washington Avenue near its intersection with Cabrini Boulevard at Margaret Corbin Circle, about 3 blocks north of 190th Street. The station is close to Fort Tryon Park and the Mother Cabrini Shrine in the Hudson Heights neighborhood of Manhattan's Washington Heights area. The Cloisters medieval art museum, a branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is located in the park, about a 10-minute walk north from the station's Fort Washington Avenue exit. An additional exit through the side of the hill leads to Bennett Avenue and provides access to the Broadway Valley area of Washington Heights.HistoryConstruction for a station at 190th Street began in 1928 by the New York City Board of Transportation as part of a subway expansion. Squire J. Vickers, the chief architect of the Dual System, helped design the 190th Street station. He was responsible for most stations on the IND, and being a painter, he did tile work for the station. Station construction was completed in 1932 along with all the other stations on the line between Inwood–207th Street and Chambers Street–Hudson Terminal, and service began on September 10, 1932.

The 190th Street subway station on the A Line of the NYC Subway offers a charming and unique experience for commuters and visitors alike. Nestled at the northern tip of Manhattan, this station boasts stunning views of the Hudson River and a peaceful ambiance. The architectural design retains a historic charm, with its intricate tiling and decorative elements. However, it's important to note that the station's elevators and escalators might not always be in the best condition, potentially posing some inconvenience for those with mobility challenges. Overall, the 190th Street station provides a glimpse into New York City's rich history while offering a picturesque commute for those traveling on the A Line.
It's a unique station built into the side of a mountain but it still has no accessibility and it can be added for next to nothing.
I think it's interesting how deep underground this station is. It's very old. But, well kept. This along with 181st IRT are two of the deepest underground stations in NYC. I love the 1900's architecture with all the decorative small tiles. Especially on the platform walls & ceilings.
This station has a long tunnel and some math on a pillar. Out of 10 I would say 9 it’s only missing 1 point for its lack of candy.
One of the more unique stations in the system. I don’t know why people say there are stairs going up to street level that smell like piss, when it’s just a tunnel one direction and an elevator on the other side. The tunnel does get wet from condensation from being inside the mountain and plenty of tourists who clog the system not knowing where to go. Aside that great station.
Very distressed ancient but the way around city needs safe modern good influence I want to avoid sometimes i dont People really get our hopes up but its a Fort 5 stars of rage
Such a creepy station with a beautiful entrance. It wasn’t crowded on Sunday afternoon
It's nice to have a station right nexto the park. Gotta walk all the way down to the station like on the side of the hill. There is actually a basketball court as u continue walking sraight from the main street entrance.
Elevators To Cabrini park are closed until Sept 2021 for replacement. For access to Cabrini park and fort washington ave Walk to 193 st & Broadway enter the park and follow the path to Stairs that will take you to the circle on cabrini park. About 10 to 15 mins of walking up. If you are coming on the A train get off at 181st station take elevators to Fort Washington Ave and take M4 bus to Cabrini Park.
DEEP station that's not that clean. The exit is built into Fort Tyron Park and looks beautiful.
