The 2X4s Square Dance Club is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote the pleasure, recreation, and relaxation provided by square and round dancing among members and qualified guests. Through lessons, the organization also acquaints the general public with square dancing basics for the purpose of acquiring new members.
We all know that exercise is good for us, but many of us find that it can become a routine chore. Our goal should be to live a healthier lifestyle. Dancing is something that can be done year-round, no matter what the weather. According to a Mayo clinic Health Letter, square dancing could be just the thing for you. That’s because although it is exercise, it is never boring!
Calories—A half hour of dancing can burn off 200 to 400 calories. Dancing can burn as many calories as walking, swimming or riding a bicycle. Two hours of dancing is like four hours of biking.
Cardiovascular conditioning—Regular exercise slows the heart rate, lowers blood pressure and improves the cholesterol profile. Experts recommend 30 to 40 minutes of continuous exercise several times a week.
Strengthens bones—Weight-bearing exercise like dancing helps to prevent or slow bone loss (osteoporosis).
Stress reliever—It is important to let go of built-up stresses of the day and relax. Your mental health affects your physical well-being.
Mental exercise—During square dancing, various “calls” must be learned through repetition. Alertness and listening are important. Recalling the commands is stimulating to the brain.
Sociability—solitary fitness programs can’t compete with the social benefits of dancing. Besides contributing to improved self-esteem and a positive outlook, square dancing is basically fun!
