Company president and founder Charles Whitney, MD made the strategic decision to create 3rd Era Dentistry as the company’s first separate division for the following reasons:
* The state of your oral health has a direct influence on your overall health. This is also known as the oral-systemic connection.
* The collaboration between dental and medical professionals is sadly lacking. This is the oral-systemic gap.
* The oral-systemic gap between dentistry and medicine is contributing to increased heart disease, diabetes, preterm labor and stillbirths, arthritis, dementia and other serious medical conditions.
* Oral health is not only a contributing factor to maximize your life span, but perhaps more importantly, your health span.
Dr. Charles Whitney is a nationally-known oral-systemic health expert who has gone on record in numerous articles, lectures and interviews as saying, “Periodontal and endodontic infections are medical conditions of the mouth that physicians cannot treat – That’s why I need to collaborate with dental clinicians if I want to bridge the oral systemic gap and provide my patients with optimal care.”

The mission of 3rd Era Dentistry is to effectively bridge the oral-systemic gap between dentistry and medicine. This gap is preventing our healthcare system from delivering an optimal level of care.
Despite the many advances in technology and pharmacology, unless dental and medical clinicians communicate and collaborate on a larger scale to bridge the oral systemic gap, we will never have a society that is able to prevent illness and enjoy a longer “health span”.
Instead, we perpetuate a “sick care” system which is really a form of slow death management. This system is bankrupting our country, as we focus on putting out fires rather than preventing them with the continued, long term treatment of millions of people with serious systemic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and dementia.
So many of these illnesses can be prevented or sometimes cured by treating oral diseases such as periodontal and endodontic infections. Until dental professionals adequately treat these oral infections, and medical rofessionals “prescribe” that their patients get needed dental care, oral bacteremia will continue to cause and worsen many systemic diseases.
The fact is that the dental and medical professions share some of the blame for the current state of American health. Working together, we can bridge the oral-systemic gap and turn it around.
