Abraham Kriel Bambanani is a non-profit organisation whose passion is to ensure the optimal development of traumatised children in need of care.
AKC provides the following services:
Residential Care:
Traumatised, abandoned, orphaned and neglected children are placed in our care through the Children's Court into any of the following residential care facilities:
Langlaagte Campus (10 houses):
- ages range from 7-18 yrs
- about 100 children with severe trauma/trauma combined with mental handicaps
- the houseparent system is used, whilst childcare workers on 24-hour duty are employed at the houses
Maria Kloppers campus (3 houses + baby unit):
- ages range from newborn - 18 yrs
- about 50 children and babies (10 children per house & 20 babies)
Satellite houses:
- offer children in our care the best opportunities for development and involvement in normal community life. There are seven (7) houses in total; Fontainebleau, Risidale, Linden, Kempton Park (2), Benoni and Mayfair.
Community Services:
Home-Based Care programmes:
- in Soweto and Westbury
- about 350 HIV/AIDS infected or affected children receive food, donations, social services, life skills, emotional support and spiritual guidance daily.
- social workers assist them with ID applications, accessing ARV drugs, grant applications and any form of counseling. "Mama's" and childcare workers from the neighbourhood keep a watchful eye on the children in our programme.
Drop-In Centres:
- in Zola and Emdeni (Soweto).
- about 200 children receive two meals daily at central facilities.
- social workers, remedial teachers and counselors are also stationed at the facilities to assist the children with homework, extra muriel activities, life skills, social services and therapy.
Educational Programmes:
Johanna Malan Early Childhood Development Centre (JM ECDC):
- 75 children aged 6 and younger
- quality formal pre-school education
- develop the children physically, mentally, emotionally and socially
- financial assistance given to poorly resourced families
Impact School:
- 40 children
- located on the Langlaagte campus
- provides appropriate level education to severely traumatized children who are unable to function optimally in mainstream schools.
Emdeni Skills Development Centre:
- 200 students per year
- provide skills training to the youth of Emdeni & surrounding area
- computer skills, vegetable cultivation, cooking and baking, business skills and life skills
- the aim of providing these skills is to improve the chances of young people to enter the job market or start their own enterprises
- a Community Help Desk is available for people from the community to be assisted with ID and subsidy applications, photocopying, Internet access, CV assistance, government info, etc.
From a Christian frame of reference, to care for, develop, empower and reintegrate traumatised children in need of care (as defined by the Children's Act) and where needed, their families through appropriate care models and therapeutic programs, to enable them to function independently and to contribute to society.
Our income generation project is a student accommodation facility, which caters for female university students. Most of our residents are from the University of Johannesburg.
"Abraham Kriel Bambanani is a registered NPO providing care and skills development for traumatised children and youth in need, in the greater Johannesburg area. We provide shelter, physical care, rehabilitation and skills development for beneficiaries that had been subjected to trauma, abuse, molestation, poverty, neglect and unemployment. This is done via residential care, community services and educational programmes."
