A wonderful place to experience live music in Chicago! Full of history, charm, and character, it has been open for over a century and was once frequented by Al Capone. We’ve been here to see jazz, which was lovely, and a comedy show featuring local comedian and puppet influencer Chad the Bird, where he gave a moving eulogy for Tina Turner. It’s cash only, so remember to come prepared!
I wanted to love this place. I really did. I loved the aesthetics. The crowd was fun on Tuesday night dance night. The Chicago Cellar Boys plated great sets, and it felt like I had gone back in time. Unfortunately, as others have mentioned in their reviews, I had an unpleasant experience with the bald bartender with the long beard. Would I return? Maybe - but I would avoid ordering anything from the bald bartender with the long beard. I wouldn't dare to inconvenience him by politely asking for a martini again.
This place never disappoints, good selection of drinks and great bands playing live. They could probably up the service and accept cards at some point. But love every time I come it’s just a great experience for music lovers.
This place is absolutely fantastic! The music was hot, the drinks were cold and strong!. Don't forget your cash, but there is an ATM in the front in the worst case. Quite a few people were dressed in vintage clothes to come listen to the band. It was a lot of fun.Food: 5/5
I love this place! The best music ever! It should definitely be on your list if you are in Chicago!Service: 5/5
Cash only establishment. 10 dollar cover. Came early around 8 and had a view of the musicians. As the second set came around it became more crowded with people standing which blocked view making it impossible to see. Lovely evening of music / but annoying patrons who spoiled mood. Behind us were tables of people who also just had their view blocked by these patrons. See photos The night I went they performed behind the bar so If you want to watch / sitting at the bar is the best viewing experience… all and all, fun ish.
We had a fantastic time! Great atmosphere. Excellent music! Very good service. A very fun place!
Must to see. Fantastic place with a special atmosphere. Awesome live music and perfect service.
This is an update to my previous 5 star review. The Green Mill is an excellent place. I go on Friday's after work from 5ish-8pm. There is no cover other than tipping the musician and bar tenders! and Chris Foreman is on the organ playing amazing music. Chill but it does fill up towards the middle/end as people start to come for the concert after. The reason I take stars off my rating is because they close their door so early sometimes on Fridays when Chris plays. For example, I showed up around 7:10 pm today to meet a friend for a drink. They wouldn't let me sit even though my friend was already there because they were already seating for the 8pm show. If this happened once, it wouldn't be a huge deal but it happens time and time again. So, if you want to go see Chris, show up by like 6:45 or don't go at all. I also go on Saturday's around 2:15 for the 3pm Paper Machete skits. That gets really packed and is sometimes standing room only. It's a fun time and no cover. I know they also have great bands that play at other times - almost always a cover so check their website.
When looking at the recent reviews, we hesitated coming here because many noted an unpleasant experience with the bartenders or staff and having their night ruined. However, we did not encounter this at all - everyone just seemed super busy due to the number of people. This was definitely one of, if not the best, jazz club in the world. Go here!!! Embrace the hype!! And get a spot, even if standing, closer to the stage. If offered a table on the side of the bar, wouldn't recommend you take it since standing individuals will be in your way. We went on a Saturday night and it was crowded - but the host made a point of asking everyone to be quiet so the music could be heard. The music was entrancing so people became quiet quickly. Would recommend getting there earlier so you don't have to stand!
