Treatment Philosophy
ARC believes that addiction is a chronic, progressive, and incurable primary illness that often proves fatal.
Addiction has the potential to affect the physical, mental, emotional and behavioural wellbeing of the addicted person. As the addiction progresses, usage becomes more frequent and life becomes more chaotic. Over time the consequences of addiction impact on all areas of the person’s life including family, friends, employers and the community. It is the progressive nature of addiction that creates the need for recovery.
Dependency on alcohol and other drugs was once thought of as a moral problem. The addict was looked upon as a weak-willed individual who did not care about other people or even himself or herself. Today, of course, medical doctors, the clergy, and other professionals realize that chemical dependency is a disease which responds to treatment. Addiction is a pathological relationship with a mood or mind-altering substance or behaviour which renders one powerless and produces harmful consequences. The addicted person is often the last to accept the disease concept. But parents, spouses, and other people close to the addict are slow in identifying the disorder as an illness. This is because they, too, are simply too involved emotionally with the disease process.
With correct treatment, the disease can be arrested, making recovery- a happy and productive life free from active addiction- a possibility.
Mission Statement
• ARC is committed to providing practical, ethical, and effective treatment initiatives to persons with addiction problems.
• ARC believes that by encouraging individuals to explore their previously damaging patterns of behaviour, within a healing and safe therapeutic environment, they are empowered to make positive and creative life choices and lead productive and responsible lives free from active addiction.
• ARC provides a safe and caring environment for those affected by addiction. Our primary focus as a professional team of addiction specialists is to assist and equip individuals with the knowledge and tools required to overcome the horrors of addiction and substance abuse.
With a view to healing the body, mind and soul, our patients are given the foundation needed for on-going, wholesome fulfilment and successful living. ARC believes, through practical experience, that the philosophy embodied in the A.A. and N.A. 12 Step programmes, offers the most comprehensive, integrated and successful treatment modality for recovery from addiction. This philosophy underpins the treatment regime that has been developed as a medium to educate individuals in the practical application of the 12 steps in everyday living- emphasizing our ethos of ‘an active living programme of recovery’.
Treatment Program overview
There are three intensive treatment phases available at ARC that aim to integrate a comprehensive, yet individualised treatment program with the practical experience of working the 12 step program. These phases are; 1. Intervention. 2. Treatment. 3. Extended Care. These phases combine to provide an overall treatment period of 3 months which research has shown to be the optimum period for addiction treatment.
The treatment program will combine audio and video presentations, educational lectures and workshops, life skills, relaxation and meditation, exercise, creativity, projects, outings with counsellors, group-work and medical support. The focus of all the activities is on helping people to work through the physical and emotional vagaries of change and to learn, develop and practice the necessary skills to live lives free from active addiction.
A valuable therapeutic aspect of all the treatment phases is the therapeutic community. Peer support is invaluable in aiding one another through difficult or painful periods, as is their insight in recognising and challenging blocks to recovery they may identify in each other. From this mix of care and support, challenge and encouragement, an effective medium for change is established.
Admissions
Admissions to ARC will be by appointment only. Proposed patients will be assessed as to their motivation and needs. ARC will only admit persons who have a voluntary desire for addiction treatment and who are suitable for the treatment programme. A medical examination will take place so as to best determine the detoxification process and will be prescribed by the medical doctor. A psychological assessment will be done shortly after. Patients may be given a few days grace before commencing with the daily program, but once the patient is physically capable they will be required to join in with group therapy and other activities that are considered compulsory.
4 week in-patient
This phase will include the detoxification phase. The 4 week Intervention phase is the necessary starting point to recovery from addictions and can mark the start of a process that leads many people to enjoy fulfilled lives free from active addiction. This phase will intervene in the life of the addicted person and create a space where they can start to understand and face the reality of their addiction. Patients will on admission, undergo a thorough admission and orientation process. This process is an important part of the treatment regime and will establish a solid foundation for the therapeutic process of treatment.
8 week inpatient
This program will include all of the processes during the first 4 weeks of detoxification and primary care. The secondary phase will consist of an additional four weeks of intense examination of thoughts, feelings and behaviour experienced during active addiction. (Step 4) We use a therapeutic approach to dealing with negative behavioural patterns and to create a sense of self awareness. Patients will undergo one on one counselling sessions with their respective councillors. Patients will attend daily group sessions and lectures that are designed to encourage self-exploration and an understanding of ones thought processes and behavioural patterns.
12 week inpatient
This program will include all of the processes during the first 8 weeks of detox, primary and secondary care as well as an additional four weeks of preparing the patient for re socialisation and re integration back into ones community as well as equipping allowing them to implement the skills acquired. The promotion of healthy lifestyles and the communication of skills aimed at enabling the patient to face real life situations without reverting to old behaviour.
Towards the latter part of each treatment phase, patients are encouraged to explore their continuing needs and the options available to them. For some patients, returning home with a Relapse Prevention plan and a package of Aftercare or out-patient may be the preferred choice. However, for others, the continuation of treatment to the Treatment phase, Extended Care phase, or external Secondary Care or Tertiary Care stages will be a preferred choice.
