Austin Roberts Bird Sanctuary

Description

The Austin Roberts Bird Sanctuary is a 11.76ha nature reserve located in the Walkerspruit Open Space System, in the Nieuw Muckleneuk suburb of Pretoria, South Africa. It became the first bird refuge in Pretoria when it was opened by the then mayor of Pretoria, Mr. W. J. Seymore, on 27 October 1956. It was officially proclaimed as a nature reserve on 26 February 1958, and it was fenced in June 1970.The sanctuary is named after South Africa's well-known ornithologist and mammalogist, J. Austin Roberts. He was born in Pretoria in 1883, but grew up in Potchefstroom as a minister's son, where the local amateur ornithologist, Thomas Ayres, was his mentor.AccessFree access is limited to the bird hide, which is reached from the northern perimeter, where a small exhibition facility is located. It has been declared a provincial heritage site due to its recreational and educational value.HabitatA former clay quarry at the confluence of Walker and Argo Spruit was allowed to fill with water, and some exotic trees were planted along its verges. In addition nine small perennial dams or wetland basins have been created, some with artificial islands, to accommodate aquatic birds and animals. The natural veld type of the sanctuary is mixed bushveld.

Nice bird hide, nice place to visit. Do struggle to get access to the rest of the park as you apparently need an apartment, but the document at the gate states you only need appointments for guided tours. Think summer months will be better to visit as bird activity isn't great. If someone knows how to get access to the rest of the sanctuary please let me know
Stressed, go for a stroll around Austin Roberts or dit on the deck of the Blue Crane restaurant and have something to drink and eat while watching the birds having a ball on and around the dam. Take many stunning bird photos. Its a real peaceful place to be in the heart of the very busy Pretoria
I realy like the birds. But the bird hide needs some serious maintenance and cleaning. The smell of urine was bad.
Amazing Bird Sanctuary. Staff cares about and keeps the hide and bird museum clean. Take a Saturday stroll through the bird hide and appreciate the beauty of creation. The atmosphere is quiet and peaceful. Remember to watch where you park your car. It's a high-risk area for car thefts.
Found a brown house snake and took it to Austin Roberts. Hopefully it will grow up healthy and not be eaten by a crane. Destiny I guess. The kids loved the excitement! I'm happy that we still find snakes. Means the area is quite green.
This is a beautiful peaceful oasis in the city. If you love nature and birding or are having a hectic day and need to see some tranquility. This is the place to go!
Awesome place for birding...Very well kept and has nice hides...There is a car guard where you park and a restaurant nearby...I would reccomend it to anybody that likes birding or photography.
Open till 6pm, with beautiful light around sunset. The surrounding parks and ponds host diverse birdlife, so bring your camera.
Went and ate at the Blue crane restaurant here, the setting was beautiful, it was peaceful and there was a variety of avian wildlife to see. You can view the wildlife from the restaurant or from a hide close by too.
Difficult to navigate because there is a long fence and the entrance is not properly marked. However, the place was peaceful and well maintained
