Beautiful museum, knowledgeable staff, interesting exhibits showing many aspects of the town's history. The Heritage Walk is a must.
A modest little museum. Entrance is free. Three rooms of exhibits. Not terribly well curated in terms of telling a story, and some exhibits are unexplained. One room is dedicated to the anti-apartheid struggle, and comprises only posters of the key individuals with a description of their role. Another room is more or less about the history of Barberton and the mining. The main room is a mix of geological and anthropological exhibits.
For anyone interested in geology this an absolute must. For a group the local guide was well worth having with you , we came away with a new understanding and interest in the rock formations and the research being done in Barberton.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes

I learnt so much about barberton and the history of it.
Barberton has a fantastic history, in the 1880's this part of town had its own stock exchange and it was full of gold drifters who has abandoned the Californian gold rush and descended on the Barberton to Swaziland mountains. These old are called the Makhonjwa Mountains they are a range of comparatively small mountains best known for having some of the oldest exposed rocks on Earth. The are now one of the Unesco World Heritage sites.
It's a museum trying it's best. What it lacks in quantity it makes up for in quality. Worth checking out if in Barberton, but not worth a major day-trip unfortunately.
Piety it is going backwards and our heritage badly neglected, lack of maintenance. Not sure where the monies budgeted for restauration goes to ? Perhaps the department concerned could andwer the question!
A small museum which has free entry. It has exhibits of various types of rock found in the area as well as some cultural items relating to local black culture.
It was okay. Small collection. My son loved the rock collection though.
