The owner of Bay Skills Academy, Rina van Zyl has been in the Security Industry since 1983. She started by working as a Receptionist for Derick Coombs at Coombs Security, one of the very few Security Companies at the time. She then underwent her Security Training and gained experience in the field, her People Skills and capabilities could not go unnoticed and she was elected on to the board of one of the first boards of the Security Industry as its treasurer, which later became the Security Officers Board. Now known as PSIRA.
Her acknowledgments in the field made it easy for Investors and Partners to want to be on board with her vision and she then got the opportunity to be involved in management level of Coombs Security, where after she started her own Security Company called Bay Security. She excelled in the service of Night Shift Officers, Armed Officers and Patrolling Officers throughout the 80’s and 90’s at well-established sites and Clients such as UPE (now NMMU), General Tyre, Dora Nginza Hospital, various Shoprites across the Eastern Cape and many local Spars to mention a few, after years in the Security Industry and many hours of analysis she thought it well to launch her own Security Training Centre to ensure her officers meet the standards that her clients demand, to ensure that the quality she desires can be enhanced in her product of service delivery. Thus the Bay Skills Training Centre was established in 1997 and has been effectively developing people and their skills since then.
It is during this time that her daughter Janine Wilson as a young high school girl started working part time to learn the ropes of the trade to take care of the Security Officers side of things of the Business whilst her parents focus on the Training side. Janine came from an era pre-democracy where there were only about 5 renowned Security Companies in Port-Elizabeth with big workforces to affirmative economic times after 1994 elections where the number of Security Companies shot from the single digits up to more than 300 small Businesses in a few years each one brokering their own deals and smaller contracts to cut out the monopoly of the bigger firms all offering their own supposed equal solutions at a better rate and customers happy to oblige to any Tom Dick & Harry as the crime rate shored and economic times became more difficult where every penny counts more than the days where the rand dollar where still 2 to 1, not knowing that slowly with cheaper deals came lesser quality Services.
Janine then with this mind-set after dissecting the future of the Security field found it wise to advise the Family not to keep all the eggs in one basket and launched her own sister company Impact Loss Control strategically to be in competition as one of the smaller Companies in the field locally. This Company was to handle smaller Industrial Contracts.
She then went on and partnered with Africa 4 Security Solutions which was to handle smaller Commercial and Construction Sites. All under the auspicious and stewardship of the Mother Company Bay Security, this proved to be very successful and cemented Janine’s existence in the trade, she would throughout the years to follow assist and provide Security Solutions to various Businesses and later also put her hand up to take Security Training to a new level offering what is called a deduction plan to existing Security Officers to be able to further their studies and do short self-study courses whilst working and paying off their studies on a lay bye approach, this has been her core focus for the past 5 years to come up with ways to get average grade E officers to further their education. Thus borrowing support to the Industry to improve Human Resources And Skills across the board.
Rina Van Zyl’s brother, Andries De Ridder an expert in the IT field in the 80’s and 90’s took care of some of the Staffing and Security Solutions of Bay Security such as Recruiting, Placement, Loss Control, Control Room, CCTV, Payroll and other administrative and operational challenges, whilst working hands on in the Retail Industry. During these times Andries’s daughter Anjé Muller, at the time also a high School Student would work part time and assist her father in the Business, gaining knowledge of the Security, Retail and Staffing issues. Anjé then started working actively in the Recruiting and Placement Industry and has been actively involved in the field for 12 years.
Janine and Anjé the two cousins decided in 2016 to join hands and merge their expertise and lifelong Family experience to provide sound Security and Staffing Solutions to the local market of Port-Elizabeth, after carefully collaborating and studying the Market and its needs around Town. In their own right they have seen and heard it all, been involved in large Dynamic Firms with various levels of Management and professional to the book touch to smaller more hands on companies with a prioritised attitude towards maintenance and ticking all the basic boxes. They each have more than 20 years’ experience in the Security and Staffing Fields, with an outstanding track record and belief in Family values their life long journey proves to be a logical trustworthy choice to any Company serious about moving forward with the modern day era where Human Resources are easily at fault and replaceable thus their main approach to curtail the decay of one officer being replaced with another or one Employee being swapped for another to hands-on screening and on-site training of the Workforce, where by you will see them physically more present on site and just a phone call away to attend to your immediate needs at any time.
Bay Skills Academy is a fully fledged Training School that occupies on a daily basis 120-150 students doing grade E-C Security and other short courses on site as well as doing self-study exams on location. We provide various basic workplace courses such as Computer Courses, Receptionist Courses, First Aid and Health & Safety Courses just to mention few.
JP Pretorius mans the Training Facility along with a team of 7 highly qualified Instructors of various genders, racial and ethnic background to ensure quality hands-on education and tutorial sessions. JP is Rina’s son and also occupies a wealth of experience in the Security Industry since childhood such as Janine. JP also has a background in Politics and done various Developmental Projects in the Townships in coaching cricket and rugby as well as other charity and fundraising initiatives for impoverished Communities. His understanding of the challenges faced by the previously historically disadvantaged people of society and his passion for development and transformation makes him ideal for the Business in educating and socially developing fellow humans, he believes in quality and perfect service and strives to leave each Student with a sense of a need to belong and an embodiment of wanting to change their lives and improve their livelihoods.
Bay Skills Driving School is also manned by another sibling and younger daughter Gillean Van Wyk and husband Renier Van Wyk. The duo are both renowned Instructors in Computer Courses, Security Courses, CCTV, Control Room and both SASSETA accredited Assessors. They both have experience in the Security and Retail Industry and possess the personality traits to work well with people. Gillean co-inciding with Rina’s philosophy of searching for ways to improve people and meeting their needs did research and found many Security Officers that has no driver’s license and don’t see the need to obtain one as they feel they will probably never buy a car and never be in a position to drive one, thus putting them years behind in actually progressing themselves and moving upwards in the chain of life from perhaps a Patrolling Security Officer to possibly an Armed Response Officer. Gillean and Renier launched the Driving School with its focus on developing the Security Industry and providing solutions to the Industrial Sector but it has however promulgated to the public at large and has since trained many satisfied clients both in the Security Industry and beyond over the past year.
