What a hidden little gem. Took my siblings here and they loved it. The guide was really friendly and really knowledgeable. Make sure you take the guided tour, it's a real eye opener and doesn't cost extra. Nice little coffee shop also to chill at while the kids chase the bugs.
Always a wonderful experience. The children learn so much, they get to see the full life cycle of these butterflies as well as having the butterfly land on them. We also ate breakfast this time and it was delicious
Lovely trip out. Closed on Mondays. Go around 12pm-13h00 during winter when the heaters have had a chance to warm up the place so the butterflies can be seen flying about. Too cold for them in the morning. Guides are pleasant and helpful. Very kid orientated. Delicious meals at coffee shop. Beautiful Art gallery if you have the time. Currently building in the monkeys area so no visitors are allowed in for feeding times temporarily. Kids can interact with birds, hedghogs, butterflies, stick insects and leaf insects. Guinea pigs, Fish and Turtles can be seen. Beautiful display of the life cycle of butterflies. Concrete learning experience.
Situated in PMB, on Willowton Road. Also has a lovely souvenir shop & coffee shop. Pricing was fairly reasonable, Adults R50 & Kids R35. Guided tour available free of charge inside by staff when entering sanctuary. Fish Food available for Koi Pond R5 per packet. Place is peaceful & serene. Just relax in the gardens & soak-in nature's beauty, with butterflies flying over you & around you, listening to the sounds of the waterfall. Not much to do inside. Maximum time spent here about 1hr 30mins. Definitely for all nature lovers
Most lovely experience. Good collection of art pieces in the gallery bought one. Wonderful collection of butterflies and moths and a few other animals. Very scenic with, of course, a butterfly theme to everything including the biscuits that come with your coffee. Let's just say this was an experience that was an 11 out of 10 for me. Make sure to come when it's sunny though. Butterflies need the sun to be up to come out.
A Beautiful and picturesque hidden gem on the outskirts of Pietermaritzburg; this butterfly sanctuary is a haven for the eyes and spirit. Staff are efficient and friendly; and exceptionally accommodating to the little munckins running around as if they own the place. The gift shop has a lot to offer the gift- conscious individual. A quaint coffee shop offers a diverse menu and excellent coffee at reasonable prices. All in all; a definite must-see when you're in KwaZulu Natal; and totally worth the Drive from Durban. 5 stars!!!!!!!
Very nice and peaceful environment! People were friendly and helpful. Cafe was good too. Had a burger, very good quality. Not an all day trip out and kot really suitable for kids under 3 or 4. They dont sit still long enough Loads of butterflies and various interesting creatures
Interesting place for children. They can see and learn a lot about butterfly while parents can tour the gallery or enjoy the coffee. It's a bit hot inside the butterfly room, so don't wear too much.
Not a bad experience, I think maybe when in the year you go will impact your experience here. The curio shop is quite nice, and the restaurant has delicious milkshakes. When I went in August however the butterfly exhibit had hardly any butterflies in it, maybe 3 or 4 that I found. The Koi fish are stunning though and the whole Koi pond layout is very nice, so there was atleast that. Bathrooms were fine, and secure-ish parking safely off the road. I would go back but in a different season.
Very good experience. It could do with a little upgrade, though, but all in all a nice place. Very child friendly. The staff is very helpful and knowledgeable. The food at the little cafe is good and also not too expensive. Fees to see the butterflies are very reasonable.
