Chimp Eden

Description

The Jane Goodall Institute Chimpanzee Eden, commonly referenced as Chimp Eden is a 1000ha game reserve and animal sanctuary for rescued chimpanzees, in the Umhloti Nature Reserve, near Barberton, Mpumalanga, South Africa. Opened in 2006 by founder and director Eugene Cussons, in collaboration with the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI), its purpose is to provide a permanent and safe home for chimpanzees who are rescued from abusive and unfortunate circumstances from areas where these great apes are being constantly exploited by humans through the bushmeat trade, pet trade and entertainment industries. At the sanctuary, the chimps are rehabilitated with the help of their care takers in being re-introduced back into chimpanzee social skills such as learning how to climb trees and live in a social group with others of their own kind.Chimp Eden is the only sanctuary for chimpanzees within South Africa. Part of the reserve it is home to game animals such as giraffes, zebras etc, which are also managed and conserved by the director of Chimp Eden. Chimp Eden has rescued chimpanzees from Angola, Sudan, Mozambique, Italy and rescued chimpanzees from the Johannesburg Zoo.Chimp Eden is a member of the Pan African Sanctuary Alliance.

"We are the only chimpanzee sanctuary in South Africa. We have 33 chimpanzees that have been rescued and is living their best life. We have 3 tours a day - 10am, 12pm and 2pm South African time. We visited Chimp Eden on our way back to Johannesburg from Kruger NP. It was a nice visit and we got interesting facts on this special animal. The lady that did the tour was really helpful and gave us lots of information. There are two families of chimps which are basically in captivity, but they are well taken care of. Each of them has a different story, for some is quite sad. It was worthwhile and I would recommend it if you happen to be close to this area.
The staff were friendly professionals doing absolutely wonderful work. The buildings and facilities seemed somewhat tired and in serious need of some TLC. As expected, all the chimpanzees were super- stars, but the baby and old man Jaoa stole our hearts.
When you see the chimps going about their business, the personalities, the family dramas, dominance between the males, etc, you know that your money was well spent. Very entertaining for young and old. Would love to go more often, if only the price p/person was a little cheaper. But well worth the experience. Amazing to learn so much about these animals. Some horror stories of where these chimps came from but very happy to see them flourish at chimp eden. Will definitely visit again!
Incredible work done at this sanctuary. Chimps are all healthy and very loved, healing from a difficult past life. Enjoyable and informative. A must see.
So glad we visited the sanctuary in the way back from Kruger. The your around the sanctuary was very informative, and we learnt a lot about chimps in captivity and also in the wild. Zama was friendly and welcoming and happy to answer any questions any of the visitors had.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
So nice to learn and see the chimps. They are amazing animals. Very passionate personal. Sadly the place is a bit run down... But still worth it.
Serving as the only sanctuary for chimpanzees within South Africa, the place and experience is truly unique. The guides are informative and educate you on chimpanzees, including the lives and journeys of the chimpanzees there. Support them if you’re in the area!
My family absolutely loved this place. We went to the Kruger but my 3yr old mostly talks about here. It's very educational and I highly recommend visiting.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
