About Finance and Investment Management
The Department of Finance and Investment Management at UJ was formed after the merger between RAU (Rand Afrikaans University) and TWR (Technikon Witwatersrand) in 2005. The department, although fairly young, offers a unique combination of programmes focused on the needs of the 21st century’s complex financial markets.
The department offers a market relevant and challenging B.Com (Finance) programme which enables students to further their studies at honours level by specialising in any of three fields, i.e. Financial Management, Financial Planning, or Investment Management. From 2012 onwards the department will offer a fourth honours programme in Property Valuation and Management which will further entrench the department’s niche focus.
The B.Com (Finance) programme distinguishes itself from its peers in that it enables students to complete a finance degree and then specialise in any one of the above three fields (four fields from 2012). All three honours programme currently on offer are aligned to professional qualifications, as follows:

The curricula of these honours programmes are comprised of a combination of modules that differentiates the programmes from similar programmes not just at other universities in the region but also nationally.
Students that decide to embark on any of these Honours courses offered by the Department of Finance and Investment Management can expect exciting developments during their studies as well as a fulfilling and financially rewarding career thereafter.
After completion of any of the above honours degrees, advanced studies can be undertaken first in any of three master’s programmes followed by the completion of any one of three different doctoral programmes on offer in the department.
The department’s M.Com (Finance) coursework with limited research programme is extremely popular with part-time students already working.
