Designs By Lawrence is backed by a rich history in the jewellery trade. The earliest recollection dates back to 1889 where Joseph Steinfeld opened up his jewellery business in Belgium. His vision was to manufacture fine pieces of jewellery that could suit various lifestyles. Joseph relocated to London in an effort to expand his business and brought in his son Harry Steinfeld.
Harry was mentored by his father and also spent a few years training in Hatton Garden by the likes of Halford & Perciville. In 1940 Harry made a bold move to open up a manufacturing firm in South Africa. His firm was one of few that both manufactured jewellery, and trained up apprentices. Harry’s last apprentice was his son Lawrence Steinfeld.
Lawrence followed his father’s footsteps and spent several years in Hatton Garden London perfecting his skillset. His training and mentoring paid off well as he became chairman of the Transvaal Branch of the Jewellers Association of South Africa & was on the national executive panel (1990 – 1993). His factory won a prestigious design award from Anglo American Gold (2000). Today Lawrence trains local individuals in the industry, designs jewellery and serves customers with more enthusiasm than the day he began.
