At my last birthday, I weighed 106kg, obese, unfit, high blood pressure and very close to being diabetic. Pandemic lockdown, working from home, marriage breakup had all contributed to my poor state of health. My doctor gave me the usual advice, I needed to lose weight, I needed to eat healthier, I needed to exercise more and improve my fitness. There are many obstacles to making those lifestyle changes, willpower and motivation being prime. In my case I had the additional burden of having recurrent and chronic neck pain, which would flare up regularly just doing household chores and sitting at a computer most of the day. Exercise of any form would make this worse. Despite the best of intentions, my efforts were not reaping results, which made it hard to keep motivated. Roll forward four months, to Christmas 2022, and I hit rock bottom. I was visiting the pharmacy weekly to stock up on Naproxen, Codeine, Voltarol, Paracetemol. I spent hours lying in a dark room with warm compress on my neck. My weight was barely showing any improvement. My blood tests showed I had just entered the diabetic range. Something had to change. I booked a session at the Blackfen Chiropractic Clinic, and was seen by Cuan Coetzee. He gave me a thorough examination, tested my reflexes, pulled and stretched me in many directions. He diagnosed nerve compression in my neck as causing a number of the random symptoms I had been having, and a general lack of mobility throughout my spine and limbs. Over the next four months, I saw Cuan initially weekly, then fortnightly, reducing to monthly. He used needles to help release / repair tight muscles. He used manipulation to reset and stretch parts of my body that hadn’t seen that sort of movement for years. He was a great motivator, encouraging me to try Pilates, and giving me exercises I could easily fit into my daily routine. This was the kickstart I needed to get healthier. I subscribed to a food parcel service to ensure I was eating fresh healthy meals in the right portions. I increased my walking distance each day, and even started some light jogging. I continued to move and stretch using the exercises Cuan set, and following YouTube videos he recommended. It’s my birthday again next month, and I will be 52 years old. I now weigh 80kg. My blood pressure is excellent. My trousers are now 36 inch waist instead of 42. I am no longer pre-diabetic. My BMI is no longer obese, nor overweight but healthy. I have not taken any painkillers of any form for three months. Cuan didn’t cure me, but he did remove one of the major obstacles to my reaching my goal. He provided support, encouragement and motivation. He was realistic, recognising I am unlikely to ever be an athlete, but giving practical, real life advice that I was able to fit into my daily routine. My neck will never be perfect, there is no cure, but it no longer controls my life, and I am no longer dependent on painkillers. Other aches and pains that we all get as we get older are no longer as frequent or bothersome as they once were. I am now able to lead an active daily life, with plenty of walking, light exercise and the ability to enjoy the outdoors. I’d like to thank Cuan for helping me to transform my life in six short months, and I highly recommend his services.
I visited Cuan seeking help for recurring lower back and neck pain. I instantly felt at ease and listened to, he took the time to understand where my pain was located, and how frequently the pain was occurring. With the treatment, guided exercises and techniques, returning to the gym has been an easy transition. I’m very happy with the results and highly recommend Cuan.
Cuan is a miracle worker. Diagnosed my trapped nerve in neck that has been causing my hands to hurt and shake for 20 odd years. Doctors and hospital told me it could be Parkinsons, arthritis, carpal tunnel, blood pressure but have had to wait to for referrals to different hospital department. Am at physio at hospital now but can honestly say that Cuan has got got me on the path to feeling better. 2 session and I can move so much more and the shakes/pain have lessened. Adjustments, the Acupuncture and Cuans knowledge have proved the recipe for rehabilitation. I would recommend without hesitation.
I’ve known Dr Cuan during a gym session. We got on very well then he invited me to his clinic. I suffer from degenerated spines. He gave me a good check up and allocated me a care plan which I agreed straight away on the spot. He treated me so well with great care compassion and amazing chiropractic techniques. His approach is second to none and highly recommend his services.
Dr Cuan Coetzee is not just another 'chiro' but has an incredible depth of knowledge, experience and genuine care that sets him apart from the rest. He should be in a professional category all on his own. Highly recommended!
I suffer annually from neck and upper shoulder stiffness... almost the same time every year and it could sometimes persist for months. Dr Coetzee had me feeling relief within the first couple of consultations. He really has a very holistic approach to healing - and has a very thorough way of explaining the causes, effects and treatment of symptoms.
I was diagnosed with severe cervical spondylosis late in 2013. I remember, because of the pain, i was rushed to the emergency unit twice in one day. After MRI and numerous other tests i was referred to a neuro surgeon who told me that he needed to do a very invasive spinal fusion of the degenerated disks in my cervical spine. It had to be done almost immediately. I was prepared for surgery and was scheduled for the operation the next Tuesday morning. Over the weekend I gave it some thought and decided to see a chiropractor the day before the operation. This is when I met Dr Cuan Coetzee. He looked at my MRI and said he has not seen a neck in such a bad state before. However, he said we should give it a go and put the operation in abeyance for now. He started with therapy immediately. Traction, manipulation, dry needling and targeted movement and exercises. It was hard at the start. I was hopeless and demoralised but he he said to hang in there and asked that i work with him. Our sessions were spread over a few week periods and after the first two weeks i regained my mobility somewhat. I kept with the program ie the exercises, the stretches and the water consumption. In addition he kept on with the treatment in his rooms. Sometimes more than twice a week. A few months later i started mountain biking again. The next year i did the 70.3 Ironman SA with a cool sub 5h45 finishing time. My best time ever. Its been almost 10 years to date and Ive never seen the inside of an operating theatre. I have full mobility and practice my sport with great ease. Its been that way for the past 8 years now. The numbness in my left hand and fingers are also something of the distant past. To be honest I have forgotten in what bad shape I was back then. Cuan, as he preferee i address him, has saved me from what would have been bouts of repetitive surgeries because once a disc fusion the chances are high you will be back for another fusion. I dont have and will never have the words to thank you Cuan. You saved the day and that without a single tablet or drug. My prayer is that everyone with degenerative disc disease, if that is the correct name, have the opportunity to consult with you first. Indeed the body can heal itself. All that is required is the right practitioner and for me that practitioner was you. Once again...thank you thank you thank you. My doctor and my friend.
I came to Cuan about 6 weeks ago not being able to bend my leg at all and struggling to work. Cuan gave me day to day stretches and exercises, after weeks of following this I had no pain and was able to work comfortably.
Can not praise my treatment high enough. From my initial diagnosis all the way through my treatment I have been impressed by the level of knowledge and the best care I have received from a chiropractor. Coming from a manual work background my treatment has been invaluable and I have highly recommended Cuan to all my friends and family.
Dr Cuan has worked on my back, neck and shoulders whilst still residing in South Africa and I was ever so sorry when he left. Always suffered from backache and the thought of going to a Chiro just scared me until Cuan came along. He has helped me through a lot especially after having my car accident where I could barely walk from the pain. He's a legend and a walking encyclopaedia of knowledge
