The Etafeni Trust was formed in 2001 and the first day care centre was built by local community members in Nyanga, Cape Town.
The Trust aims to develop this promising practice model of a multi-purpose day care centre or ‘hub’ of integrated services that can be replicated in other communities in Southern Africa and also in other AIDS-affected developing countries, which will respect and fulfil the fundamental material and psycho-social needs of orphans and vulnerable children and their caregivers. To that end, Etafeni was invited to replicate the model in Vrygrond, Cape Town and Nwamitwa, Limpopo.
Vision and Objective: The main aim of the Etafeni Trust is to lessen the impact of HIV / AIDS on children, youth and adults (predominantly women) by providing holistic care and support (‘integrated services at a non-medical site’) to AIDS affected children, including orphans, and their caregivers. The Etafeni Trust works within the ambit of Aaron Motsoaledi’s HIV / AIDS / STI Strategic Plan for South Africa.
The set of programmes in the centre are:
1. Etafeni Craft Works, Income Generation programme – for HIV+ mothers and caregivers;
2. Fit for Life, Fit for Work, a life and work skills programme – for unemployed matriculants;
3. FoodGarden – for food security education and nutrition;
4. Toddlers’ Class – for AIDS-affected and vulnerable children 0 to 3 years;
5. Pre-School – for AIDS-affected and vulnerable children 3 to 6 years
6. After School Care – for AIDS-affected and vulnerable school-going children 6 to 18 years
7. Community Caregiver programme – for support of OVCs in community and surrounds.
8. Nutrition programme – The programme focuses on malnourished children from the ages of 0 to 5 years. The dietician trains the cooks and plans menus. The dietician trains Community Care Workers to identify malnourished children and networks with local health facilities regarding referrals and support systems.
9. Mobile Flexi Hour Voluntary Counselling and Testing and TB Screening – This programme is a partnership between Etafeni and Desmond Tutu TB Centre / University of Stellenbosch. Desmond Tutu TB Centre employs a professional nurse and enrolled nurse, Etafeni employs four lay counsellors to work in this programme. The Programme markets itself in local schools, factories, community structures, via NGOs, CBOs, in community newspapers and on community radio stations. The programme is based on site at the Etafeni Centre and offers clients free drop-in confidential counselling and testing, referral to treatment and other programmes for clients who tested positive. It also does outreach work in informal settlements, etc, and participates in the HIV prevalence study in the Nyanga area.
The participants of the income generation programme are trained in sewing and beading. The hand crafted products are sold under the newly established brand name, Etafeni Craft Works, offering existing and potential customers a professional and reliable source of delightful crafts. This business aspect of the programme is managed by experienced sales and marketing individuals, with the aim of skills transference to participants with an entrepreneurial spirit.
