A hidden gem! Lovely reserve with lots of game and great driving and hiking trails. The Chalets are cozy and basic but are more than adequate for a weekend stay. Will definitely go againRooms: 4/5
Ezemvelo is truly a Highveld gem. You feel like you are properly away away from the hustle and bustle of the city. A wonderful place to unwind and enjoy the joys of the Grassland. Take a bicycle or some walking shoes and enjoy the reserve slowly. There are plenty of birds and animals that won’t eat or trample you. The reserve management are really friendly and took my reservation for one of the chalets at the last minute. I think it is in good hands. The lost star is for some areas of improvement. The roads inside the reserve are in a terrible state and have deteriorated significantly since I was last here. Some roads appear on some maps but don’t look like they exist or are passable anymore. There are numerous broken picnic benches and tables that are in need of some love. Parts of the walking trails need a bit of a “shave”. The chalets, whilst good value for money, could use a little spruce up although in fairness they are better than before. We were told we would be able to access the Wilge River which borders Telperion Reserve but there is a locked boom preventing this. The current management have only been there for two months. I’m hoping they have big plans for the reserve and look forward to visiting soon to add that final star.
It's a perfect mix of landscapes.. a river, pools, mountains and plains..very quiet and tranquil, I really liked the hiking trails.. Don't forget to go to the wonderful Rock Pools. Lock your food from the monkys and close your windows at dawn. The road is terrible, be prepared.
Personally didn't enjoy this nature reserve, it has so much more potential. Signage to the reception unclear no sign on the reception itself either. I did not have any issues like others with monkeys. The hiking trail has a couple of areas where you have to cross water/mud. But it doesn't look like it's intended to be there, the worst crossing was near the end, first of all the water is completely mixed with oil and animals drink it too and second of all in order to pass it your feet will have to get wet and you risk a face plant when walking over the stones.
We went camping. Super friendly staff Small shop with basic essentials Ice, soft drinks. Basic pantry items. Personal care. Great scenery Ablutions cleaned regularly Braai area cleaned every morning Monkeys are a bit of a nuisance, but they have someone chasing them away on a regular basis.

What a lovely experience. Paid R75pp and you get access to 3 beautiful hiking trails, loads of off road paths to explore with your 4x4 or 2x4, a beautiful swimming pool and loads more. We opted for offroading and had the most amazing time. There is something for everyone...beautiful birds, loads of different animals and then stunning wild flowers. The provide you with a great pamphlet to tell you all about the different species of animals and birds in the areas. Everything was lovingly taken care of and it was amazing to spend a day in nature. It is not too far from Pretoria so do yourself a favour and take some time to unwind. Bonus: 98% of the reserve has no cellphone signal.
Beautiful animals and stunning camping site. Trees and braai areas wonderfully positioned. Electric outlets available. Make sure you clean up all the time to help with preservation of this stunning nature reserve. Charlie and Kyle are wonderful professional engaging hosts. We only stayed for one night and we will definitely return for a longer stay. Great for family and friends. Fully self catering but there is a small shop to purchase firewood and other essentials that you may have forgotten. Kids play area, pool and a beautiful dam for fishing. Game drives are available. Monkeys everywhere which was pretty cool. A high rise vehicle would be ideal as there is a long gravel road leading to the place.
Fairly nice place, had a nice experience gathering with friends & colleagues for a team building & script development session however we could not enjoy our food in peace with all the monkeys surrounding us and looking like they are about to snatch the food from the table. That was overwhelming. We ended up not eating. Last thing I wanna do is to fight a monkey, period. Would have been nice to have a spot for that peace of mind for eating
