Description

A brief history of the school.
Glenbrack JH opened its doors on the 12th January 2004. A waiting list of 400 learners from primary schools around Alberton could not be places in the local high schools. The two Afrikaans medium schools decided to amalgamate after their learner enrolment dropped drastically and the English medium school decided to move into the premises of one of these Afrikaans schools.
Unfortunately during the time the school buildings were standing empty, they were vandalised and the once beautiful grounds were overgrown. Huge alien trees damaged the paving and corridors. When the previous school moved nothing was left behind to start Glenbrack JHS, she was started in an empty shell. There was no infrastructure, no resources, no management plan, no budget, no furniture, no staff establishment, no planning to start a new school by the Ekurhuleni South District - nothing , not even keys to the building.
A district official was approached on New Year’s Eve to start the new school that will accommodate the unplaced 400 learners. In January 2004, Glenbrack JH opened its doors, without educators or support staff. The name Glenbrack is a conglomeration of previous school name and the area where it is situated. The district office sent 8 educators who were declared in excess from other schools to come and form part of the teaching staff at Glenbrack JHS.
Most learners come from previously disadvantaged areas around Thokoza, Katlhehong, Vosloorus and Soweto, and they have to use transport coming to school. Many parents are unemployed and can barely afford transport money for transport for their children to come to school. The school has a feeding scheme for all the learners who don’t food for lunch.
The school offered matriculation examinations to its grade 12 learners for the first time in 2008 and registered a 94% pass rate. In 2009 we achieved 69%; in 2010 we achieved 71% and in 2011 we achieved 88% pass rate.
We are proud that the learners who come to us are not selected because of thier excellent academic records nor excellent sport awards. We build excellence out of them.
