Helm Architects was founded in October 2007, the founding members being Marius and Johan Helm.
Marius Helm is the resident member of the practice. He joined Helm Architects with more than 10 years
experience in the management of an architectural practice in the Eastern Cape and Kwa-Zulu Natal for
Bartsch Architects. Before this he worked for Wim Phielix & Sadie Architects in Kroonstad as an Architect
in training. He is experienced in all fields of Architecture & Project Management for projects in both
private and government sectors.
Johan Helm is based in Welkom in the Free State. He worked as a student for the company JC De K
Witthuhn & Maree for 5 years in Bloemfontein. Moved to Welkom in 1986 and worked for Andre Wessels
Architects for two years, became a partner and practiced with Andre Wessels for 7 years. He started his
own practice (Johan Helm Architects) in 1995.
Johan Helm’s membership ended in Feb 2009. Helm Architects & Johan Helm Architects has a good
working relationship and will support each other on large projects. All members of this practice are
registered with both the South African Council for Architectural Professionals and the South African
Institute of Architects.
