The History of Henna

It’s been believed that the practice of Henna started out as an answer to the need for air-conditioning in the desert.

The Henna plant, whose botanical name is LawsoniaInermis has several medicinal properties, chief among them its ability to cool down the human body.

When the desert people of Rajasthan, Punjab, and Gujarat became aware of Henna's cooling properties, they dipped their hands and feet in a mud or paste made with the crushed leaves of the plant. Even when the mud was scraped off, they noticed, as long as the colour remained visible, their body temperatures stayed low.

Eventually some women grew tired of bright red palms and found that one large central dot in the palm of the hand had the same effect, while being more pleasing to the eye. Other, smaller dots were placed around the center dot, which gradually gave way to the idea of creating outright artistic designs. To that end, a thin instrument made of silver or ivory (in India) or wood (in Morocco), then most commonly used for applying kohl to the eyes, became the instrument of choice for Henna applications, and it is still in use in desert villages today.

Only in the last decade or so have the popular Indian cone and Moroccan syringe, both of which are able to deposit the thinnest filaments of Henna onto the skin, come into play as modern counterparts of the simple stick.

FAQ

How long does henna last?

The stain should last for a couple of days at the very least, and may last as long as a month. Thinner skin (i.e. the back, stomach, inner arm) will fade faster than thicker skin (palms and soles). Also, the faster you exfoliate, the faster your henna will fade. Dabbing the dried henna paste with a sticky syrup (usually a lemon juice/sugar mixture) before you remove it will make it last longer, as will keeping the henna on overnight (wrap it up to avoid crumbs in your bed!). Henna stains are extremely variable and depend a lot on skin chemistry. If you get a particularly poor stain or it fades unusually fast, try another one on a different body part!

How do I care for my henna?

Once the paste is on, make sure to be careful not to smudge it; mistakes can’t always be repaired and they may stain. Nobody wants to end up with a brown splotch on their hand. Leave the henna on for as long as possible; an hour at the very least, and if the henna is on the upper arm, chest, stomach, or back, several hours at least are preferable. Once you’re ready to remove the paste, rub it off over a garbage can. You can use a little oil to get off the hard-to-remove bits. Don't wash it off, and try and avoid washing the area for at least 24 hours. There is a tradition that once a person has henna, they can’t do housework or chores until the henna fades! Enjoy!

What is henna? Is this safe?

Henna also known as Mehendi, refers to a paste made from the dried leaves of the henna plant, Lawsoniainermis. This paste can be applied to the body to make intricate designs. Henna can also be used to dye clothing, leather, hair, and nails. Henna applied to the unbroken skin of a healthy adult is 100% safe, and in fact henna has many therapeutic and medicinal properties. If you are allergic to Cajeput, Lavender, or Tea Tree Oil, Citrus or monoterpene alcohols, please speak to your henna artist. If you have a naphthoquinone sensitivity or G6PD deficiency, then you should avoid getting henna.

I have never had a customer report an allergy to my henna, even those who have many other allergies. A patch test is still a good idea if your skin is particularly sensitive. It seems that citrus allergies are far more common than allergies to henna; as there are often citrus ingredients (lemon juice) in our henna paste.
Please advise if you have any allergies.

I saw this thing called ‘black henna’ - what’s that?

"Black henna" is a misconception; true natural henna only ever leaves a reddish-brown stain. While there are related arts that use blue or blue-black pigments (for example, indigo, woad, or khidab), black henna does not exist. What is commonly marketed as 'black henna' is a dye (which may or may not have some henna) that usually contains a dangerous chemical called para-Phenylenediamine (PPD). PPD is very harmful for the body and should never be applied directly. It can cause blisters, open sores, and even permanent scarring. If you’ve gotten a 'black henna' tattoo, please tell your doctor. Recently, stalls have been popping up offering "PPD-free black henna". While it may be PPD-free, it’s still not pure henna - these products usually contain charcoal or arrowroot, and all sorts of additives and colourings (sometimes shoe polish!). Sometimes 'black henna' is done with body paints or airbrushing. The point is, whether it’s paint, chemicals, or something else, it’s not henna.

Don’t you have to be Indian/Sephardi/Muslim? Is this against my religion?

Nope! That’s one of the great things about henna - anyone can use it. While henna does have ritual significance in many cultures, it’s not “sacred” to one specific culture or religion and it’s accessible to anyone who approaches it. There is an enormous diversity of henna traditions: religiously, ethnically and culturally.

Will you henna my child/grandchild/youngest sibling? Is there an age restriction?

Children under the age of 4 shouldn’t get henna - their skin is very thin and delicate, and they often can’t sit still for long enough. Henna can be applied in small amounts to children between the ages of 4 and 7 (if they are very good at sitting still and letting it dry). If you let us know ahead of time, we can bring glitter paints and body paint for younger children. Henna applied to the unbroken skin of a person over the age of 7 is perfectly safe.

Is henna a tattoo? Does it hurt?

No.In English, there are no useful words to describe a henna stain decorating the skin, so henna designs are frequently called "henna tattoos". Hennaed skin is not tattooed. Unlike a tattoo, henna only dyes the outermost layers of the skin. No needles are used. Henna is painted onto the surface of the skin. Having henna applied feels like having your skin decorated with pudding. The process is relaxing and pleasant.

How can you get rid of a henna stain?

Taking a swim in the pool, washing the dishes, washing it with soap and water, scrubbing it with anexfoliator, etc. will all help to fade the stain faster.

Henna aftercare
Once you get your henna done, wait patiently to dry and keep it on for maximum amount of time. Longer you keep it on, darker the colour would be. Generally for hands and feet I would recommend keeping it on for 8 to 10 hours. Keep it on for 10 to 12 hours for other body parts and stay away from water.

Usually henna paste dries in 15 to 30 minutes. Once it dries, dab on sugar water or Lemon juice and Sugar mixture on you henna design with a cotton ball or spray it on (not too much). This mixture makes the henna paste moist and protects it from cracking. Also, moist henna paste releases more stain.

Once your henna design is dried and sugar water is on. Keep your hands at the safe distance to avoid any accident. Before going to bed (if your henna is on for 10 to 12 hours) you can scrape it off and apply Vicks. It will keep your skin warm and stain will improve overnight. If you are planning to go to bed with the henna on, then wrap your henna design with the Hypafix tape, elastic bandage or simply with the toilet paper. It will keep henna paste in place, warm your body improve your henna stain and will keep your bedding clean. Cotton gloves can also be used for hands. I won’t recommend using cling wrap as it will make you sweaty and henna design will get mushy.

In the morning you can wash your hands and apply olive oil or clove oil. However for the brides I will recommend to stay away from water for 24 hours. Just let the henna flakes off on its own and apply clove oil on the henna design area.

Henna stain responds with the passage of time. At first it will be light orange, then it will become dark orange and after 36 to 48 hours it will be dark brown to dark burgundy depending upon the skin type and how you cared for the henna.

Apply Vaseline on henna design area before taking a bath or before going for swimming. Water, soap, shampoo and chlorine fade the henna stain quickly.
