It is a system that was developed over 200 years ago by Dr Samuel Hahnemann, a medical doctor who had become disillusioned with the practice of medicine in the 1700’s.
Homoeopathy is based on the law of similars. The word Homeopathy comes from the Latin words meaning “similar suffering”. Hahnemann discovered that a substance which causes illness in a healthy person, can cause cure when given to a person that is ill. For example, homeopathic preparations of coffee are often used to treat insomnia. And as we all are aware, coffee is a stimulant and keeps one awake and alert. But when given in a homeopathic form to a person suffering from insomnia, it induces sleep.
This healing system recognises, that all symptoms of ill health are expressions of a disharmony or a state of imbalance within the patient and that it is the patient that needs to be treated and not just the symptoms of the disease. Homeopathy takes into account the physical symptoms as well as the mental and emotional state of the patient when prescribing.
Homoeopaths believe that when a person gets ill, they need to treat the whole patient and not just a part of the patient. A patient who is treated homeopathically will notice an improvement of their complaints as well as an improvement in energy levels, mood, quality of sleep and their immune function, making them more resistant to infections.
This is because homeopathic treatment reintroduces harmony to the body allowing the patient to operate and function at their optimum. Homeopathic medicines are derived from flora, fauna and minerals. Homeopathic medicines undergo a process of dilution and succession which make the remedies more effective. The remedies which were used by Dr Hahnemann are still effective today.
Homeopathic treatments are effective and fast acting when treating acute infections and inflammations such as colds and flu, tonsillitis, ear infections, diarrhoea, vomiting, bladder infections, fever etcetera. But they are also effective in long standing complaints such as sinusitis, headaches, migraines, IBS, problems with periods and may others. The aim of any good homeopath is to bring the patient back to health quickly, gently and permanently so that the patient is not dependant on medicines for the rest of their lives.
