Itchyfeet operates in the uThukela district, around the towns of Ladysmith, Winterton and Bergville, KwaZulu-Natal. The man behind Itchyfeet is Dr Gustav Greffrath (PhD Recreation). In his doctoral thesis the adventure experiential learning (AEL) methodology was put to the test by comparing an expedition-based wilderness programme with a centre-based adventure programme. His findings led to the conclusion that this methodology (AEL) is extremely effective in reaching personal and group-related outcomes, regardless of what the AEL programme or its outdoor setting is. He grew up in Ladysmith and spent most of his time in and around the Central and Northern Drakensberg. Complementing his academic background, Gustav is also:
● A registered adventure guide with the National Department of Tourism (KZN 1549)
● THETA-accredited (613/L/083168/2010) for single-pitch rock climbing and abseil supervising
● THETA and APA (African Paddling Association) accredited for whitewater trip leading
● MDT (Mountain Development and Training Trust) accredited for advanced mountain walking leadership
● Chairman of the African Paddling Association
Future aspirations include creating river, rock and mountain interventions suitable for the enhancement of personal and group-related outcomes.
It is our mission to provide authentic experiences leaving you refreshed, informed, exhilarated and inspired.
