Thanks for 10 great days at Kite Kahunas, the best place to stay in CT! What really made my stay awesome was senior kite instructor Ruben Gonzalez, he is hands down the best kite instructor ever. I've been on courses and camps all over the place, and never experienced such great and cool guy supporting us on the beach, in the waves and during late nights in the bars!! :
What a good time, I start from zero and Ruben came with to Langebaan when needed. Super experience. Don’t look more go on!
Cape Town is probably one of the most challenging spots to kite. I was looking for a kite school that understands my weaknesses and works with me on them, which I found here. The training concept is really great and this relativizes the price in my opinion. First of all, your level, your challenges and your goals are discussed in a personal conversation. Based on this, you get a recommendation of which courses and packages are suitable. It is also explained exactly which teacher you will get and why. All teachers are handpicked and have different specialties. All are super competent and know exactly what they are doing. After each training session there will be an evaluation what was good, what you want to do better and how close you are to your set goal. If necessary, the plan defined at the beginning is adjusted again. In the end you decide what you want to do during your lessons and it will be perfectly done by the teachers which leads to fast peogress and lots of fun on the water. Another reason for the incredibly fast progress is probably the walkie-talkie system that is used during the sessions. This allows direct communication with the kite instructor and direct feedback. I wanted to learn how to surf in waves. Ruben, my kite instructor, tells me over the walkie-talkie when to enter the wave, where to steer the kite and what to do with the board and before I know it I'm surfing a wave that is bigger than me. A special service is also the driving service. To learn fast downwinders are also made but without all the logistical hassle because there is a driver who brings you with your stuff to the spot and then picks you up again on arrival. There is no need to change clothes, you can just jump into the car in your wetsuit. The driver also gives additional security because he doesn't just pick up the group but always has an eye on the kites during the downwinder so if something happens or you want to stop early he can react immediately. To make it short I have never found such a good training concept and felt so safe while kiting as here!
I can't say enough great things about Kitekahunas! It is an awesome school run by really professional and nice people. Their downwinder teaching technique is totally unique and allows you to make extremely rapid progress learning. Their instructors are the best. Their rental gear is top quality. Background: My friend's wedding in Cape Town in late November 2018 gave me a great excuse for a 2-week trip focused on kite surfing! After struggling on-and-off in the past 5 years a day in NY here, three days in Cabarete there, very variable instruction throughout I was still at a late beginner level, and not very confident in the water. I did my online research like you and chose to book 1 accommodations in Sunset Beach staying in one of the 2 nice apts in the Kitekahunas house, and 2 private lessons + their wave camp at the end. I was all in! From the get-go, Wolf the owner and Christine the school manager were 110% responsive, professional, helpful, and nice. They helped me decide what gear to bring, and what to rent instead. My kites were too big for Cape Town so I didn't bring them. During my trip, I kited for probably about 8 days total, each one with Christine texting me when to be at the school, how the conditions were, and who my instructor would be. Speaking of their instructors... Wolf the owner who is a professional kite surfer and world record speed kiter with a PhD in psychology and many patents and inventions to his name has assembled a rockstar cast of professional kite surfer instructors. There is Thibault, from Belgium, a super-nice high-flying former pro aerialist. Eduardo and Pierre, wave surfing experts from Italy. Hui, the calm and experienced Cape Town local. And many more. During my time with Kitekahunas, my lessons took us to Langebaan, Melkbosch, and best of all, downwinders from Sunset Beach back to Table View. It was great to see so many spots! The downwinders ensured many hours of practice time... without once having to walk back up a beach! What's better, 10% kiting and 90% walking most schools, or 99% kiting!!? The wind direction and length of beach is perfect for this. Even better, Kitekahunas has a revolutionary waterproof radio headset that allows you to speak with the instructor WHILE YOU ARE RIDING! That means not only is the instructor kiting next to you, they are giving you verbal tips as you ride. With kiting, the devil seems in the details... tug on this line at this time, edge your board in this different way, dive your kite right when X or Y... and Kitekahunas' instruction was expert in that regard. Their wave camp also does video recording of you and analyzes it after. FYI, there were four friends from Europe in their 40s and 50s who were much better kite surfers than me but were still taking instruction this way to improve upon their skills. Suffice to say, if you're looking for a company run by great people that has fully optimized how to teach kite surfing, whether you are a beginner or intermediate or even advanced--and with great accommodations too--look no further!!
Way overpriced. Management is horrible and extremely pushy. You pay in advance without knowing if conditions will be good. Forms and forms to fill, for kitesurfing ?!? Stay away if you can, there are better schools. It’s a shame because the teachers were really nice.
It was the most helpful kite sessions I´ve ever had in my life with the biggest process. On the first day we started in the lagoon, to see if I´m confident enough on the kite. The next day we went to the ocean where you can make big progress. Especially the "downwinder" on the open ocean helps a lot since you don´t have to worry about staying upwind. The team is very professional and they'll help you with any questions you might have. Thank you Christine and Pier for making my stay an unforgettable one. If you get the chance I would highly recommend visiting Kitekahunas! I will definitely come back again.
Highly recommend this school! Very professional; great equipment. Had two days of private lessons with Pier; very experienced and a great teacher.
Learning to wave kitesurf has been a dream for me for many years and I am so glad I took the opportunity to do this with Kitekahunas! A special warm thank to my amazing instructor Alessio who made the whole experience great in all aspects - I always felt very safe no matter the conditions, I got way more progression than I had hoped for thanks to his expertise and support and last but not least - we had loads of fun! Learning to ride waves with the downwinder concept is simply brilliant! And the days when this due to wind conditions wasn't possible, Christine and Alessio were flexible to find other alternatives. It was also a true pleasure to meet Chris who drove us home from the downwinders - always meeting us at the beach when we came up from the water with a big smile! Staying in the Kite Villa was really nice - super convenient with the beach around the corner, always clean and fresh in the house thanks to Maria and nice to be able to chill by the pool on non windy days. Thanks Kitekahunas and Alessio for making my stay truly amazing, I can't wait to go back!
I learned to kite with KK in the early months of 2016 as a local university student. 3 years later i still fly slingshot and have good relationships with both wolf christine! they are very accommodating and help you find what you need out of the local kite surfing scene. They have cool down winders stretchy along thee entire Blouberg coastline - maximizing learning time. They sell both new and second hand gear to accommodate people from varying price brackets. i have also had 3 of my friends learn through KK and they are also kiting strong currently and love the sport. I would highly recommend KK to anyone local or abroad. Casper 21
I did an intensive kitesurfing beginners course Module B, C and D at Kitekahunas this summer. I worked 3 months remote in Cape Town, and wanted to become an independent kitesurfer; and I must say I succeeded quite well! All thanks to the Kitekahunas downwind method, but especially the extremely competent teachers: Iason, Alessio and Pier. I started in November with 2 refresher days in Langebaan. Accompanied by Iason, who really knows how to motivate you and explain very well the kitesurf basics, to prepare you for the big ocean. After the refresher course I did in total 13 downwinders, spread over 2,5 months. The first one was quite a challenge. I lost the board like a thousand times, and wasn’t able to get it by body dragging upwind. Luckily my teacher Alessio or Pier was always around to help me out, and give the right instructions. Every time I did a little bit better, ending up as a dependent kitesurfer, doing 2 downwinders a day.
Special thanks to Alessio and Pier to be so supported and guiding me through the ocean. You guys are excellent teachers and also a lot of fun to work with! Also many thanks to Christine for managing all the lessons. And Paige for making those awesome photo’s!
