Lady Slipper parkrun

About

parkrun organise free, weekly 5km timed runs, open to all! Lady Slipper parkrun starts at 8am every Saturday.

Description

This is a one lap, anti-clockwise, scenic trail covering fynbos and forest vegetation right under the Lady Slipper.
The trail starts near the boom gate between two large tractor tyres, heads towards and enters a dry dam. Upon exiting the dam the trail has a gentle incline to the public camp sites which when reached takes on a westerly direction passing a Labyrinth. Approximately 200m later you’ll switch back to the east eventually meeting the “Lady Slipper Hiking trail” where you will have a short climb before switching west again. This section provides clear views of the Lady Slipper before making its way into a forest of tall blue gums snaking to a narrow and rocky straight which then climbs to the most elevated section of this trail. From there you’ll enjoy a somewhat rocky and gentle decline through another beautiful forest of well-established bluegums and massive boulders. As the trail descends with a multitude of twists and bends, crossing a few homemade bridges, it makes its way out of the forest with another change in vegetation and scenery. This area has a number of straights and flats before a long incline returning you to the forest as you head back to Falcon Rock in an easterly direction. Coming out the forest you enter a short flat straight hugged by purple fynbos when in flower (Heather), with a spectacular view of the ocean peeping out in the distance between two hills. Another short section through forest will have you meeting Falcon Rock, a now well-known climbing rock where the falcons used to nest. From Falcon Rock it’s about a 500m downhill descending quite quickly taking you through the last stretch of fynbos and proteas to the finish.

Beautiful scenery
An a-maze-ing parkrun. Not crowded, well coordinated, ample parking, toilet facilities and dogs allowed. Not good for prams. An enthusiastic Run Director instructs us to run towards the hills which provide a picturesque backdrop, but warns us too late now that this is not a Parkrun, but a trail run! The first section is jeep track over open veld but this soon turns into a single track into the forest - mostly rocky or with log obstacles so little time for sightseeing. The track winds up through blue gum trees which offers limited view, with patches of thick undergrowth in places, so that you can only hear other runners nearby. You will cross a number of small bridges over small gullies and where no bridges you run down and up the gullies. This all adds to the interest factor throughout the run while keeping your heart rate up. There are a few places for the first 1 to 2 kilometers which will allow you to overtake another runner. At last the track heads downhill, but don’t be fooled, there are a number of reverse winding sections before you get down to the open section which still continues through trees, though more widely dispersed. In this section follow the signs as the ‘maze’ effect can trip you up. I saw a few runners think they were on a correct path only to find they had strayed unintentionally. The final stretch is across open veld, still along jeep track, making its way to the start where the sign, a permanent feature, now shows Finished. For some it’s literally so, as this is no ‘walk in the park’ - but I would do it again - anytime. A big thanks to the volunteers for the 88th event.
Fun trail run/walk. The last bit up the hill is a bit tough, but fun. I would just have enjoyed it more if the tough bit was first. But a definite must do! My 5year old survived it. . .
Best Experience with awesome trail and wonderful crowd. There are some drinks available to but after the run.
Awesome Trail Parkrun. Great volunteers. Not the easiest, but a must do.
Beautiful landscape and a very friendly group of parkrunners. I only went along with my family to take a few pictures but ended up walking a short distance of the trail looking for a member of our group. I am definitely going back to do a full parkrun here soon. A scenic and relaxed morning out in the countryside with plenty of restaurants nearby for a coffee or breakfast afterwards.
Friendly faces. Beautiful scenery One of my favourite parkruns in the PE area.
Its as challenging as a trail can be and is a lot of fun
One of the tougher Parkruns in PE, but totally worth it. Beautiful trail run in the forest with some great views along the route. Great fun for anyone
