What is a Learning Mentor?
We work within the school communities, alongside teachers, parents and Educational Psychologists. Often we have been teachers in the past. Learning Mentors support students by bridging the gap between those 3 groups of adults.
What kind of work do Learning Mentors do?
Many children build up 'blocks' in the classroom and they can display behaviours that are irregular and disruptive to their progress. This can be anything from aggression to withdrawal and giving up. In turn, the behaviour can be 'over-diagnosed' and classed as a condition that needs to be medicated. In my experience, it is worth exploring other methods before committing to chemical intervention. Learning Mentors work with the underlying social and emotional causes to clear the learning barriers. In many cases this process has avoided unnecessary medication and stigmatising labels.
What does a Lift Off Learners session look like?
We start off with one to one work, to get to know each other. It is also important to create time and space to allow natural learning characteristics to reveal themselves. This is achieved through creative activities like drawing or movement. Or sharing something fun like a visit to the park.
Then through a series of light, shared tasks we can unlock how best a student learns. This includes spotting whether their 'lead setting' is visual, aural or kinaesthetic. This helps to build a solid sense of self which is the basis for setting goals and achieving them.
We can then work on more focussed tasks like homework, school projects and exam preparation.
