Mervyn Gers grew up in a small village bordering the Kalahari in the Northern Cape of South Africa. The beauty, colours and textures of his childhood landscape (as well an obsession with Istanbul and the East) inspires his work.
Mervyn Gers Ceramics produces functional and decorative handmade ceramics.
The functional dinnerware sets include plates, jugs, mugs, bowls and platters. Each set is individually created to the client’s needs with different designs, colours, shapes and printed transfers.
His Koi and Blue Willow set won the prestigious Best Decorated Award at the Ceramics South Africa Cape Regional in 2011.
His most recent plates and bowls can be found at Babelonstoren as well as from the famous chef Marlene van der Westhuizen.
The decorative art pieces have up to 30 layers of glaze and are fired up to a minimum of 5 times. The use of very thick glaze gives the pieces a glass like appearance.
“I am fascinated with ceramics from the Far East, Japan, Korea and China. I especially love the Hagi, Shino and Celadon glazes.” says Gers.
Even though these pieces are mostly influenced by Oriental ceramics, it still has a unique, local appeal.
The studio is in Paarden Eiland, Cape Town. In December 2011, Mervyn Gers Collective was established with Diana Ferreira, Karen Kotze (Woven Ceramics) and Noel Yardley. The four artists work in a different medium, ranging from porcelain to black or stoneware clay.
The open studio can be visited during the week. Appointments can be arranged either by email to [email protected] or by phoning +27 21 510 2385.
