Mountain Zebra National Park

Description

Mountain Zebra National Park is a national park in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa proclaimed in July 1937 for the purpose of providing a nature reserve for the endangered Cape mountain zebra. In the early 1930s, the Cape mountain zebra was threatened with extinction. The National Parks Board of Trustees proclaimed a 17.12km² area for the zebra's preservation. The mountain zebra population of the park comprised only five stallions and one mare and was insufficient to expand the population. By 1950 only two stallions remained, and a neighboring farmer, Mr H L Lombard, improved the breeding pool by donating eleven zebra to the park.By 1964, there were only 25 zebra in the park. At this time, the park's size was increased to 65.36km² and Paul Michau donated six zebra to the park. From then on, the number of zebras increased steadily to about 140. In 1975, the zebras were re-introduced to the Western Cape at the De Hoop Nature Reserve.Since 1978, capture and relocation of mountain zebra to new habitat have been part of the routine management of the park. Currently (2015) the park's herd number over 700 animals, and an average of about 20 animals are relocated each year. Through the years, additional farms have been purchased to increase the size of the park to the current 284km².FaunaOther mammals found in the boundaries of the park include caracal, Cape buffalo, black rhino, eland, black wildebeest, red hartebeest, gemsbok and grey rhebok. In 2007, the South African cheetahs were reintroduced to the area. In 2013 three Transvaal lions have been released. A predator-proof fence prevents the large predators from entering neighboring farmland. The camps in the park have been fenced as well.

This is a SANPARK and one of the best our country has to offer. The park is beautiful in a dramatic and eye-catching way. The family cottages is very neat and clean and worth the stay but all the accommodation the park has to offer is of top quality. The staff and game rangers are very friendly and helpful. The park contains a lot of different animals and there is always some to see on a drive or 4x4 trail.
Accommodation is excellent. Very comfortable. Fire place that shares the living and sleeping space with an air con for hot days. Oversize bathroom and large sleeping room. Very nice view as per the picture provided. Not a very busy park and a mixture of biome that will excite anyone. The Ubejani route was a misty paradise early in the morning while the afternoon brought hot grasslands and grazing animals to life. Loads of small animals like bat eared fox, mongoose, spotted ganette, brown hyenas, secretary birds, carakal were all spotted during the day or on the night drive. It's also a very historic area for the boere war. It has a beautiful well kept series of pools and camping sights that are very enjoyable. Again not very busy so you can relax. My partner and I fought over the placement in rankings of this one over the other parks we have visited and we conclude that this is a firm 2nd to Kruger. Animals can be seen all over, many mongoose families are around. The usual suspects can be found at almost every turn. If you are an avid flora enthusiast then check the time of year you come because they boast a unique and massive conservancy of indigenous wild flowers and bulbs that are magnificent. Loved the stay. Edit: after doing the Roouplaat/Kranskop loop we are in love.. Absolutely beautiful. Excellent facilities.
What a wonderful park! Such diversity, something for everyone! Bird life is outstanding, and the views from the short hiking trail in camp are mind blowing. Restaurant staff are good, and the food is more than adequate! Chalets are in need of updating and maintenance is required, but overall we loved every minute there!
Amazing Park! Has a piece of my heart. So peaceful with great bushveld.
We loved driving through Mountain Zebra NP. Especially the loop road deep into the park through the mountains was excellent. The road is said to be suitable for all car types, but I would certainly recommend a 4x4 or at least high clearance. The road is very steep in some places and passes through water more than once.
Nice place to visit. Only stayed over one night. Always walk with shoes on or you will be sorry as there are plenty of thorns. Ablutions are clean and water is hot. Camp sites are not very private
Wonderful experience. Park was clean, staff very helpful and the restaurant makes delicious food. Will be back again.
Our 1st visit and it was most enjoyable. We stayed in Cradock so was about 10min drive to the park gate. We just went in as day visitors every day. If you have a wildcard entry free Our 1st drive started with 2 buffalo and kudu within 5mins of entering the park. We only did 2 of the loops the 1st day and saw a lot of the plein wildlife, zebras , red hartebeest, wildebeest, springbok, blesbok Reception and shop/restaurant about 7km from gate and 1 gets your permit there to which must be produced when you leave the park Our 2nd day was a highlight as we had amazing sightings of 2 cheetah at different places. There are also cheetah tracking walks 1 can do. The lions remained elusive but we saw some more buffalo The biggest entertainment we got over the 3 days were the ground squirrels who just blocked the road and seemed very habituated There are a few picnic sites and some amazing views of rocks , mountains and a river. The roads are gravel but suitable for all types of vehicles. One could drive the park in about 4hrs
This is one of my all-time favorite parks. The different landscapes and scenic views are beautiful. The accommodation is top notch with enough room for a family of 5. There is a restaurant that serves delicious food like stews, burgers, and seafood options. The view from the restaurant is gorgeous, and you can see wildlife grazing while you enjoy your meal. The staff is friendly, and the curio shop stocks various items made of leather as well. The pool is such a nice addition and is handy on summer days. One of the picnic areas has a pool as well. A definite must see! Playground: There is a picnic area with a pool and a jungle gym. Picnic area: Various scenic picnic areas with braai facilities. There is a picnic area with a pool and a jungle gym as well.
Such a beautiful and scenic place to visit. Would highly recommend it. Chalets are snug and cosy with a lovely fireplace for warmth. Loved our visit.
