Nan Hua Temple

Description

Nan Hua Temple is the largest Buddhist temple and seminary in Africa, and is situated in the Cultura Park suburb of Bronkhorstspruit, South Africa. It is the African headquarters of the Fo Guang Shan Order, covering over 600acre. Fo Guang Shan was established in 1967 by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, and is a Mahayana Chinese Buddhism monastic order. The Temple, like its mother order in Taiwan, follows the Linji Chan school of Buddhism as well as the Pure Land School.HistoryThe Temple can trace its roots back to 8 March 1992, when the Bronkhorstspruit City Council, under its chief executive and former church minister, Dr Hennie Senekal, who had previously visited Taiwan to promote investment opportunities in his town, donated six hectares of land to the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Order for a Chinese Buddhist cultural and educational complex. The Fo Guang Shan Religious Affairs Committee subsequently sent Venerable Hui Li to be the founding abbot of the temple, whose main aim is to promote Buddhism on the African continent. Construction began in October 1992; the eventual cost of the temple complex was sixty million South African rand.

What a beautiful temple! It's so peaceful and serene. The monks are friendly and it's looked after so well. All the artwork, statues and even the architecture is kept clean and in excellent condition. I've attended one of it's Chinese New Year Festivals and it was a spectacular event. There were lots of celebrations and lots of stalls with food and merchandise to be bought and it was just overall a fun experience. I'd definitely recommend it and I'll definitely be returning again.
Visited the temple with two friends. The place needs to be rejuvenated a bit. The interiors are great, loved the smell coming from that "smoke" and loved the sculptures inside the temple, but outside... the temple could use some paint. I really loved the long descriptions about the period of time when x and y happened, but I think they need to put a bit more of them. You have to take your shoes off in the second temple, and phones are not allowed inside any of the temples except the smallest one that has a green roof. You kind of have to walk small but considerable distances to end up taking a few pictures. Getting to the toilet is a slight ride and the toilets are not that clean. I particularly remember this one Asian lady that gave me a flyer in the second temple and explained where I had to go because she was nice. It was a nice experience, but If you decide not to visit this place will not miss out on anything extraordinary.
Beautiful, well- maintained temple. I was surprised that it was so quiet but it definitely added to the serenity of the place. The main temple has breathtaking Buddha statues and you can't photograph it so you've got to see it to believe it
What a magical place.. The size of it alone blows you away and the temples are breathtaking. It has a otherworldly feel to it, a silence I cannot describe, you should go and experience it yourself. No vegan options at the Cafe, and no dairy alternatives for coffee. Bathrooms are clean and tidy.
Very beautiful, peaceful and tranquil place. Has been closed the few times we have gone past. The structures are breathtaking
Chinese new year festival... the year of the rabbit... what an amazing event with amazing vibe and amazing food... will definitely visit the temple again on a nit so busy day. #grateful
This is the largest Chinese/Buddhist Temple in the Southern Hemisphere. It's definitely worth the trip to see this majestic Temple with beautiful carvings and statues, stunning ceilings and amazing decor. Please dress appropriately. No hats/shoes allowed inside the Temple. No photos are allowed inside the Temple or inside the museum and curio shop building. Lovely Chinese items on sale at the curio shop. When you are inside the Temple, you take 3 x incense sticks and you can pray and poke each stick into the 3 pots available. It's definitely worth the drive to see this place at least once in a lifetime! Please donate to the Temple- donation boxes are placed inside. Entrance is free, so I am sure that funds are required for the upkeep.
Attended a meditation retreat. The programme was interesting, balanced and with enough time in between. The focus is on meditation and not on any religion or beliefs - making it accessible to all. Accommodation is basic, private and very clean. Mealtimes are an experience of vegan Chinese cuisine most of the dishes were unfamiliar. The six o clock chanting and meditation session in the morning is the highlight. The temple tour was well presented and enjoyable. Administrative process from booking for the retreat, up to booking out is professional and easy. Weekends are getting booked up very quickly. Definitely recommend for liked minded persons.
What a magnificent and peaceful experience. Everything is well maintained and the staff are very friendly. We will definitely be back to experience everything on Chinese New Year.
What an incredible place! We saw it earlier in the year on our way to Dullstroom and so glad we decided to vist. A vast, immaculately kept property with 2 temples and very informative followers. There are 2 temples, a guesthouse and an orphanage all funded by devotees from around the world. Cannot wait for the Chinese new year celebration. I can highly recommend a visit. There is a coffee shop in the Guesthouse complex which serves very mediocre food but they would normally provide vegetarian buffet for free to visitors but not in the pandemic. You will leave with a feeling of peace and tranquility.
