Nguni Umbala provides a wide range of Nguni hides to consumers seeking sought after decor for their homes.
Deriving its name from the amaNguni people, the Nguni established itself as a means of survival as people migrated into different parts of South Eastern Africa. Although the popularity of this hardy, disease resilient, fertile breed was wide spread, it was eventually Shaka kaSenzangakhona Zulu himself who truly captured the essence of this beautiful animal and recognized both its cultural and economic importance. The Nguni somewhat personified the essence of a powerful Zulu nation under the rule of Shaka Zulu, an uncompromising ability to survive and grow under some of the hardest and most testing conditions. The expanding herd size of the amaZulu provided economic wealth and status.
Shaka selectively bred cows for the colour of their hides and used them to signify and recognize the different regiments of his army. For example, his elite personal guard was recognized by pure white shields made from the hides of animals from the royal herd, the inyonikayiphumuli. To this day cattle, and in particular the Nguni, hold significant cultural importance to the people of kwa-Zulu Natal.
