Pretoria Art Museum

Description

The Pretoria Art Museum is an art gallery located in Arcadia, Pretoria in South Africa. The museum in Arcadia Park occupies an entire city block bounded by Park, Wessels, Schoeman and Johann Streets. The Pretoria Art Museum was established to house the City Council of Pretoria's Art Collection, built up since the 1930s. The collection received an early windfall in 1932 when Lady Michaelis bequeathed a large number of artworks to the city council after the death of her husband, Sir Max Michaelis. The collection consisted mainly of 17th-century work of the "North Dutch school",. South African works included pieces by Henk Pierneef, Pieter Wenning, Frans Oerder, Anton van Wouw and Irma Stern. The collection was originally housed in the Town Hall. As South African museums in Cape Town and Johannesburg already had good collections of 17th-, 18th- and 19th-century European art, it was decided to focus on compiling a representative collection of South African art.Aside from these artists, work by Hugo Naude, Maggie Laubser and others was acquired. The purchase of international work was focused on more affordable graphics prints from Europe and USA. More recently there was greater emphasis on contemporary South African art and building a more representative historical collection also traditional arts and new-media. After the death of the sculptor Lucas Sithole 1994, half of his unfinished work by Haenggi Foundation was donated to the museum after documented by art historian Elza Miles. The South African collection now includes work by Gerard Sekota and Judith Mason. Since the mid-1990s, the New Signatures competition is also held at the Pretoria Art Museum.

An awesome space, definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area. Adult Entry Fee : R25 - Worth the experience! Friendly and helpful staff. I would’ve personally liked more of the artworks to have a written explanation about the pieces or about the artist. I learned a lot about South African artists and look forward to visiting the museum again!
The place needs maintenance services from the outside, honestly! There's a small fee to pay discounted when you bring your student card. The museum does have variety of themes they cover but only 4 are the biggest. Out of the 4 themes only one stood out for me personally. Some of the displayed art is rather disappointing but it is still worth checking out. I'm just sharing so one wouldn't be disappointed due to high expectations. There are sculptures and ceramics too. Oh what I really found to be cool was/ still is the art equipment/ stationery etc. With that one can refine their art using different tools or whatever....
It was really clean and well air conditioned. I came in the summer and it gets super hot in Pretoria so the refreshing cool air that hits you when you step in just gives you life! My friends and I had the best time taking pictures and admiring all the artwork. You can watch our experience on my YouTube channel: Kissmyabby and subscribe for more vlogs!
Spacious and modern, this is a highly versatile exhibition space with the inside partitioning designed to be adjusted to the needs of artists. The gallery will benefit from additional marketing of its events in the general external media. This is a quiet space and perhaps a best kept secret within Pretoria.
Really nice exhibitions, only R25 to get in , a good day out. Very sad to see the state of the building and the gardens though, completely neglected- shame , used to be so niceVisited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
The art on display was very impressive. The reception staff and security were friendly and courteous. Unfortunately the museum building and walkways to the museum have been allowed to fall into disrepair, which was very disappointing. There were even leaks in the roof. Are the priceless artworks being properly looked after?
Some gorgeous artworks in a fairly run-down building and park. The staff were exceptionally nice.Visited onWeekdayWait time1 hr+Reservation recommendedNoParking spacePlenty of parkingParking optionsFree parking lot
Really enjoyed the exhibition, Amazing artistic pieces on display at this museum. The staff were accommodating. For the small fee of R 25, you are taken on an artistic adventure. Unfortunately no cameras allowed in the gallery but definitely worth it if you are a lover of art
I had the chance back in 2018 to visit the Pretoria art museum I like that place for sure, lot of art and nice stuff inside, courteous and kind staff along with the inexpensive entrance fee. I have been please with my experience there.
It's great and clean and the security guards are kind and very informative. This one of Pretoria truest gems. It's what art lovers can do to just get inspired.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
