Rekord, Pretoria’s biggest newspaper, weekly provides residents with the most important community news in greater Pretoria.
Ask the man in the street what the most important function of a newspaper is, and chances are that the most common answer will be that they are disseminators of information. A second function which rates highly is that they are "society’s watchdogs".
The abovementioned functions will probably stay part of South Africa’s newspaper industry for several decades yet.
However, changing economic circumstances place increasing pressure on the editorial content of newspapers, and the danger exists that standards of quality may drop to such an extent that newspapers could become dangerously insipid because there is simply not enough space available for it.
Due to their particular approach, community newspapers understood the healthy balance between commercial success and journalistic excellence.
Over-emphasis of either of these two components (advertising versus editorial content) will sound the death-knell for any community paper.
This grasp of the hard economic reality, linked to their inherent capacity to adjust to a fast-changing world, is probably the reason why regional newspapers worldwide achieve generally more success than do daylies.
They are the workhorses of the media world that achieve laudable and astonishingly high ideals through hard work and practical, workable principles.
Capital Media lives up to these principles, and in the last few years it grew to become the publisher of the most read newspaper in Pretoria. We accept that this position carries great responsibilities, and we are thankful for the opportunity to serve our community even better in future.
Rekord’s mission is to foster the prosperity, success and happiness of our city and its people with all the strength and talents which we received from above.
