The importance to develop sheep and goat farming in South Africa is pivotal in providing a source of income and prevent hunger in Africa as a whole. Small stock are ideally suited to small scale and communal farmers as they are treated as a commodity rather than cultural symbols.
That said, the potential contribution of small stock to the South African economy are subjected to the limitations imposed by a wide variety of diseases. Knowledge of these diseases, their causes, occurrence, treatment, diagnosis and prevention needs to be openly addressed to the consumer to deliver the final product appropriately and safe to the market.
Much is been done in various fields by very fine South African entomologists, helminthologists, virologist and others scientists to assist the small ruminant farmer to manage better and produce good genetics successfully for the sake of the whole industry.
May their contribution be honored here in full.
