Tugela Falls

Description

Tugela Falls is a complex of seasonal waterfalls located in the Drakensberg (Dragon's Mountains) of Royal Natal National Park in KwaZulu-Natal Province, Republic of South Africa. It is generally accepted as the world's second-tallest waterfall but there is an argument that it is actually the tallest waterfall in the world, rather than Venezuela's Angel Falls. The combined total drop of its five distinct free-leaping falls is 948m. In 2016, however, a Czech scientific expedition took new measuments, making the falls 983 m tall. The data were sent to the World Waterfall Database for confirmation. The source of the Tugela River (Zulu for 'sudden') is the Mont-Aux-Sources plateau which extends several kilometers beyond The Amphitheatre escarpment from which the falls drop.Height controversyThere is an argument that Tugela Falls is the tallest waterfall in the world, rather than the more commonly cited Angel Falls. This argument is based on two likely inaccuracies regarding the presumed heights of the respective falls.Firstly, many now believe Angel Falls is not as tall as was initially surveyed by American journalist Ruth Robertson in 1949. The quoted figure of 979m corresponds almost precisely with the difference in altitude between the top of the falls and the confluence of the Rio Gauja and the Rio Churun, which is roughly 2km away from the base of the Auyan Tepui escarpment and 1.6km downstream from the last segment of the Rio Gauja that could possibly be considered a ‘waterfall’.

I've been here twice and this place is one of the most serene breathtaking places that I've been to. Would definitely recommend. The best day hike in South Africa in my opinion and the best one night overnight hike, the sunrise is just spectacular. The chain ladders on the way up is an obstacle worth conquering. This hike is also the easiest way to get onto the Drakensberg escarpment. A 4x4 is definitely needed but a 4x4 shuttle also runs up the mountain to the start of the hike. Besides that there is an entrance fee to the park and a hiking fee.
Shuttle from hotel or a serious 4x4 required to get to the start of the trail. Very beautiful views. Waterfall is seasonal - went there in september and not a drop of water in sight. Still the views are amazing and trails are a lot of fun.
An amazing hike to the top of tugela falls. The views are breathtaking, unlike any other in the world Camped at the top overnight, the stars were incredible. Highly recommended to do this hike in your life. The chain ladders were exciting
Amazing hike to the top of the Amphitheatre sentinel peak side. Quite a steep uphill initially tiring but doable. About 7.5 km from the University Station past the Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge. Just be careful if you decide to start from there as the dirt road is in a bad state and you will need a 4x4 or large bakkie and add like 45 mins to the trip to get there.
Really cold in June but a spectacular experience. Road is seriously bad - need a vehicle with VERY high clearance. Ladders are scary but doable. Wind can be quite hectic at the top, if camping you should make sure your tent is properly pegged down.
One of the most amazing views and the most accessible peaks on the escarpment. A hike that can be done up and down with a lunch break in between. Worth every effort. Just be advised that as of 22-08-2021 the road leading up the mountain to the car park was in a truly shocking condition. Only real 4x4s will make it, an SUV will battle and a car will break.
World's highest waterfall . Do it over 3 days with "Hidden Gem South Africa." In this way you get to see two caves , summit mont Aux sources and return via a loop
The waterfall itself is nothing spectacular. However, the views that comes with being on top of the waterfall is what makes it such an amazing experience.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Beautiful hike, but waterfall is dry in August. Incredible landscapes at the top, although very windy. One of the nicest hikes in Africa
Hiking to the Tugela Falls is a "To Do" list adventure that should be high on the bucket list. The chain ladders hike is doable - it's tuff, and scary but I'm a middle aged moderately fit women and I'm só happy that I did not doubt myself. The mountains are breathtaking! You have to see it to believe it - no words can describe it's magnitude. I expected a bit more water at the Falls, but it was August and there has been little rain the previous summer Just go, you'll have no regrets.
