Very nice place, great upmarket feel. Service was great, Thabiso was very professional and efficient. Good selection of beers, ciders etc. Food was really good. The beer battered fish was epic! with the mushrooms in firm 2nd place. Dish sizes are a bit small, so order two. Decor is really well done, The place gets busy too. So always a good vibe and nice background music too. Definitely recommend it. They also brew their own beer their too. Did I mention the fish was good? : Will be back at some point.
If you see reviews with the word "cool" & you really are in to "cool" restaurants & hipster, millenial Brooklyn vibes then this is a place for you. Their concept is great & important & most restaurants should do the same. Location is odd but very industrial. Again like Brooklyn. The food, tapas style, was tasty, not amazing nor bad. It was just ok. Staff was friendly & helpful yet waiters need lots to learn. Would I recommend it ? I guess if you want to go for a place to hang out & chill with your friends & family, this is it. I personally like more formal dinning with food that will leave a visual & palatable experience to remember. This place was forgotten as we got the check.
Located inside the Mad Giant brewery at 1 Fox Street, this tapas restaurant is a worthwhile visit for tourists and locals alike. The menu is somewhat seasonal, and caters for meat eaters and vegetarians alike. Each menu item is paired with a recommended house beer some of which have been named/awarded the the best beer in Africa title. There is also a beer tasting option which allows you to try out 100ml of each, before picking your poison for the day. The kitchen is open to the restaurant, and you can see the delicious dishes being prepared. Since it is tapas, the plates are small, but I found the individual servings to be of a good size. Depending on your appetite, 2-4 dishes would make for a filling meal. The interior is a sight to behold, with its high ceilings, exposed brick walls, murals and installations. Light fittings and furniture reminds you of red, life-sized Lego /Meccano pieces. Textured wood surfaces, polished cast concrete, and the massive stainless steel tanks for the brewery completes the contemporary look and feel of the space. The staff is courteous, friendly and well informed. They're always able to assist you with menu options & details. It's best to make a booking in advance, since the venue is popular for events, and you may be turned away when arriving without a booking, or be disappointed by a rowdy bunch, celebrating in the shared space.
29.10.2019 I went to Urbanologi as part of a vintage wine tasting event I was invited to. I've been wanting to come here since they opened but never had the guts to drive to JHB. Finally conquered my fear and attended this event. Loved the place, the setup and the vibe. The tapas type food we received was delicious and makes me want to come back for a full on meal experience. We ate the following: •Yakutori Chicken with Urbanologi Chimichurri. Juicy tender pieces if Chicken, perfectly spiced. •Compressed Watermelon, Olive Tapenade and Feta •Tempura Enoki Mushrooms with Smoked Garlic Relish and Nori Salt. Best dish ever. Light crispy batter and full of yumminess •Beetroot Dauphinois, this for me needed something extra. •Lamb Belly, Roti with Harissa paste, pickled red peppers. Amazing. Melt in your mouth amazing. •Pork Fillet, Potato Puree, Candied Bacon, Brussel Sprouts. Again, delicious and cooked perfectly. Could have left put the brussel sprouts Lastly was a Cheese Board – selection of local cheese, Preserves, Rye Croute and Seed Crackers. Everything went well with the 2 white wines and 4 red wines we got to taste on the day. Great friendly service from all the staff. Really excited to go back sometimes and experience more. #TheFoodMusketeer #TheFoodMusketeerEats #TheFoodMusketeerDrinks #TFMUrbanologi
Great spot with delicate flights of delectable goodies and a micro brewery on site to keep you oiled with craft brews. Do go in a group of 5-6 and share as many of the plates as you can, you will not be disappointed make sure you try the seaweed emulsion that accompanies the potato wedges. Cocktails were restrained and tasteful, and beers were legit - I tried both the house porters and they were excellent. Dessert was slightly less exciting but couldn't take away from a great meal! Service was very good starting with reassurances from security upon entry take that as you wish, this is Joburg.
Urbanologi is a vibrant inner city eating experience where special little details surprise you on a gigantic scale. This eatery prides itself on locally sourced ingredients, witty waiters, and enormous vats of beer. It is, afterall, inside a brewery. Having opted to drive myself, I can't comment on the entire selection of beer, but their Super Session Cannabis Ale was pretty damn impressive. Having opted to drive myself, I can comment on the safe parking lot, and amazingly friendly car guard on duty... so, if you were wondering if parking your car in central Jozi in the middle of the night was prudent: It is! But damn, do I wish I ubered instead, just to drink the beer. Back to the food! Don't expect to order your own plate of food to wolf down like at your annual birthday excursion to Spur. Urbanologi is suited to a more tapas-style experience. Most of the plates are easily shared between four people, so get a selection of flavours a nibble away. It is delicious and fun in a strange Afro-Asian-pub-fusion sorta way. If it is on the ever-changing menu when you go, I can highly recommend the Beer Battered Fish on a spectacular thick tartare and the Sweetcorn Daltjies with a spicy Vietnamese chilly sauce.
This was a surprise with super trendy decor and a fantastic waiter. We could order small portions to sample more. Ingredients are farmed no more than 150km away from the restaurant.
Food is great and well presented. The meat tapas were very good, the desert was a bit soso. The place is lovely and well decorated. Try the house beers as the restaurant is in the brewery.
Urbanologi is an urban legend! Going in, thanks to its ridiculously high ratings, expectations were ridiculously high. Urbanologi delivered. From the moment we stepped out of our cab, we were warmly greeted and assured of safety in the urban environment, to the moment we sat down, the service and professionalism was unmatched. But most importantly, the food was what we came for! The tapas style at Urbanologi caters for all tastes, from spicy to crisp fried deliciousness and healthful cured goodness. My only recommendation is to order a spread across the menu and savour the inventiveness of every style and technique. I loved that the chefs presented gorgeous plates balanced in taste, texture and style. This restaurant is uber chic and uber delicious, a must try urban legend!
We went to Urbanologi as part of Restaurant Week 2018 and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Each of the six courses were beautifully presented, exceptionally tasty, and justified the "not cheap" price charged. Staff were efficient, helpful, and the kitchen accommodating in dealing with a seafood allergy. I look forward to celebrating future special events at Urbanologi :-
