History

This spot in Alphabet City goes by three names: “Vazac’s”, the original name when it opened up as a catering hall in 1935; “the Horseshoe Bar”, after the bar that wraps around the room with thirty-one beer taps; and “7B” after the corner it’s on. With it’s red brick exterior, castle like doors on the corner, and large, multi-panned Tudor windows, one reviewer described it as a place that Model-T Fords could be pictured parked outside of.

In 1962, American writer Dawn Powell used it to mark the eastern edge of New York (though she called it Vasac’s Avenue A bar) in her last novel, The Golden Spur. Apartments were created on the second floor a few decades ago and an ornate staircase in the back now leads to nowhere and has since been used for storage.

In 1974's The Godfather Part II, Pentagelli is nearly garroted here before the executioners violently kick open the old doors and escape, and it was here in 1986’s Crocadile Dundee that the Australian meets a New York City prostitute. The bar is used for the exterior of the Life Café in the movie Rent because the real place wasn’t considered grundgy enough anymore. Scenes from Angel Heart and The Paper were also filmed here, and it’s a favorite spot for shoots for New York City crime dramas like Law & Order.

Gina and Meg took really great care of us! Great atmosphere, awesome selection of tequilas too! Great for movie/TV fans, sports fans and all looking for a bar with no silly gimmicks but doesn't skimp on friendly awesome service!
This is the kind of bar in which I prefer to spend the bulk of my time. There is a good high end bourbon selection if you're into that, and a bunch of tvs playing different things. For instance, baseball, return of the jedi, step brothers and die hard 2 were all going at the same time. Solid bar.
Old faithful Alphabet City institution. Saw some faces I knew & many new ones too. The night I went they had an awesome spread in the back of free Wisconsin cheese tastings. I even got a complimentary Fireball shot. Other than that I was happy with my Vodka Sodas & Jameson shots. This is a comfy corner bar across the street from the park that you may recognize from old episodes of Law & Order.
Godfather II, Crocodile Dundee, and The Verdict were all shot at 7B. In addition to its cinematic history, this bar is a fun place to be anytime of day. I’ve been here with the day crowd in the middle of the afternoon and I’ve been here having Long Island Iced Teas at some ungodly hour. The bartenders and bouncers are the nicest people and the drink selection is classic with some new age brews. I don’t go here often, but I should. It’s always a good time. Also, love a bar that has a booth.
Great little pub a little more on the touristy side. Prices were a little higher than i thought, but all in all a pretty good experience. Lots of TVs for sports watching and an eclectic crowd that frequents the place.
This is a great spot for a lot of reasons. If your a TV or movie fan this place will look very familiar. Especially if Jessica Jones is on your Netflix list. The staff was friendly enough and the beer was priced fairly. Would definitely go back.
Updated dive-bar which keeps the character it had from back in the day, but offers a mix of decent beers and bottles of super cheap Red Stripe etc. There are nostalgic video games at the back and a wide selection of sports being shown on big screens. For classic 80s movie buffs, this is where they shot some bar scenes in Crocodile Dundee one and two.
Bouncer was amazingly chill. I went with a couple friends but forgot my ID and he was nice enough to let me in. Great guy! I would say his name but it escapes me. The place itself was okay. The drinks were decent.
You want a dive bar? You got it! Feels like you should be able to smell nothing but smoke and dust. Great service. Highly recommend!
Love love love this place. Friendly, unpretentious, not too loud, unlike a lot of other bars in NYC. Great atmosphere redolent of 1950's New York. It's a little divey but not too divey. Good selection of reasonably priced beers. Interesting mix of patrons, it seems a popular spot with East Village locals for a quiet pint or two.
