Ok, this place is awesome. Was there too much food? Yes Was it delicious? You betcha Was it welcoming? It really was Do I recommend it? Yep. It's a cafeteria style place with a lot of different options. Zero pretensions, clean, a nice staff and not expensive. I loved it.

My mother's family was from Haverhill. We paid a visit to the children of Israel cemetery on a typically cold and dank New England January day. Afterwards, we needed lunch and decided to go to the A1 deli for the first time. We felt that we have been teleported back many decades. Not a hipster in sight. Only regular local customers. The owners were gruffly friendly and warm in the classic Massachusetts milltown manner. I ordered a bowl of hot, buttery, thick, homemade seafood chowder with clams and haddock. My wife ordered chicken rice soup. The lunch was wonderful. The next time I'm in the Merrimack Valley, I will drive out of my way to eat here.

This is not the place to go if you're looking for fancy or table service it's more like a cafeteria. But if you want well-prepared hearty food at a reasonable price you will not go wrong here. While I don't go here often I have been going here for 40 years and never been disappointed.

Sometimes in life you just get lucky. After pulling of the interstate for gas we googled lunch me. A-1 Deli was a delightful experience. Wonderful food, maybe too large of portions and an amazing staff. I'll go out of my way too stop back Everytime I'm in the area. Heads up. They close the first two weeks off July.

Homemade fish chowder every Friday. We think it's the best. A large bowl with delicious bread & butter.
