I was so happy to visit the park... unfortunately, I was unable to reach the lake, the smell of "pee" all over the stairs was killing me. It was smelling everywhere... Dispite the nice view, the option to jog, practice your morning yoga, bike, walk your pet, It was unbreathable. And the landscape of homeless melts your hurt.
Given the significance of this place, I was expecting a monument or a plaque commemorating the historical landing. Hence I was surprised to see how simple the park is. The only things I saw in the park was an old signboard about a paddling trail, and a stone wall with inscriptions of the words “The Town of Houston” and selected extracts of a document written by A.C. Allen. If I didn't read up about the history in my guide book and checked the location of the park in Google Maps, I would have missed the park completely. It would be nice if the authorities put up an information panel in the park to explain the history, and put up maps and directional arrows outside the park to guide visitors to the park.
Allen's Landing Park is one of the most historic locations within the city, it was the founding place of Houston. In John and Kirby Allen's time, this particular bank of Buffalo Bayou was remote, muddy, and overgrown. Through the promotion of the Kirby brothers, this muddy bank turned in to a steam boat port and a center for cotton trade. Unfortunately, this era of prosperity was bore on the backs of the enslaved. Regardless, this area has seen significant change since the Allen's time. Any good Houstonian should visit the founding site of their city. There is direct access to the Buffalo Bayou Hike and Bike Trail and a short walk to several MetroRail stations as well as parking.
this is where it all started, they were having a boating event. it is a historical mark with wonderful life filled people always trying to better the area.
Nice area for fishing, walking, biking, jogging, kayaking or just chilling
It was okay place to see I just put 4 stars and not 3 was because I have a scooter with me
Cool park down by the bayou in close proximity to the UH downtown campus. Dog-friendliness: Dogs are welcome long as they are leashed
Excellent boat dock in the most historic part of the city. Do need security guard at night though
Scouting for the event at the park today. It was my first time being there.
