Nice movie theater specialized in indie and foreign movies. We've been there on a Saturday's morning to watch The Boy and the Heron. It was a nice experience! Don't expect for comfortable seats and huge screen - if your looking for that, that's not the place for you. But atmosphere is cozy and comforting. Audience was quiet during the whole movie - which helps with the experience. But the noise from subway was quite distracting. Anyway, a good experience overall.
This was my first ever independent film theater when I was in my 20s. It has been a few years since I've visited, but they still have friendly staff & it's always clean. The popcorn is good, too!
Saw the boy and the heron here. Great theatre overall, seat layout is very different from AMC/other bigger chains, but it’s much better in my opinion. Also has great food options
beautiful theater. the food at the upstairs cafe is great and well-priced. watched “all of us strangers.” it was fun hearing the nearby subway during the movie haha
Came here to attend The Last of Us immersive experience and the staff was amazing. Everyone was so nice, security was nice too and wished everyone fun. The only complaint I have and why I’m taking one star off is due to accessibility and seating. In regards to the seats, if you are let’s say over 250 pounds the seats will not be comfortable for you to sit in. If you are taller than 6 feet you will have no leg room as I standing at 5’9 had my knees touching the back of the chair in front of me the entire viewing. Accessibility wise, I believe it’s steps and steps only. The theater I was in was located on the lower level of the theater which was, from as far as I know, only accessible by stairs. When it comes to getting to other levels of the theater I’m not sure. To get inside of the theater it’s also stairs only. Overall I’m glad I had the opportunity to attend the early viewing of the last of us
One can count on the Angelika to deliver the independent films that are thought provoking. This place is an institution and should be patronized every time you have the opportunity to do so. This time I saw “Perfect Days” - theatre was organized and the audience members were also given a special shout out in the introduction by the Director and protagonist.
Since movies are old-hat and so am I , frankly, I no longer attend them. Of course, with modern amenities, just because I was in a movie theater sipping on cappuccino does not mean that I was movie-watching. However, my friend was and I was waiting for her to appear. The theatre was fine, the drink was fine and the location was fine. Many people drive to parks that used to be battlefields, I subway to entertainment halls that used to entertain. Vigorous changes scrub us clean, I suppose.
Interesting selection of movies old and new, foreign and domestic. Cafe is overpriced. We enjoyed Amelie, a French film from 2011. Nothing was playing in traditional theaters that appealed to us, so it was nice to be able to come here for something different. Bathrooms were on the lower level.
The 3 stars are for the amazing film selections that the theater has... the absence of two stars is because of the $9 Smart Water, the neck pain you get from staring up at the screen if you're in any row except the back two, the light coming in from the windows, and the grainy film quality projecting on the screen. Indie venues like this are great for experimental films and niche audiences and it comes with a sacrifice for the comfort. I also tried to see Barbie here because it was one of the last theaters offering a mainstream movie viewing so last minute.
The films are always good. The problem is you need to choose your seats wisely in the one theater we were in. Since the floor is not slanted, the seats are positioned on an equal plane. This makes it hard to see the screen if someone sits in front of you. Maybe choose seats in the middle of the theater? Haven’t tried, but I could only see the person’s head in front of me during my last viewing experience.
