Story

Animal Aid is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, no-kill animal rescue and welfare organization that has been passionately serving animals and the people they love since 1969. We operate a free-roam shelter for cats, a foster program for cats and dogs, and two community programs: The Animal Aid Cares Fund, a partnership with veterinarians across Portland to provide financial assistance for urgent vet care, and C-SNIP (Canine Spay/Neuter in Portland) a partnership with PAW Team to provide funding for canine spay/neuter services to homeless and low-income families.

Mission

It is our mission to reduce animal suffering by providing assistance to abused, homeless, injured, and sick animals; find loving, dependable, and nurturing forever homes for the animals in our care; actively promote the altering of all pets to reduce overpopulation; and educate the public by promoting respect for all animals, the ethic of compassion, and the need to be kind and responsible stewards.

Products

Animal Aid facilitates cat and dog adoptions, operates two community programs, and provides informational and educational resources and for pet guardians. We have several onsite and offsite volunteer opportunities, including caregiving, socializing, fostering, administrative assistance, and more. Find out more about us at animalaidpdx.org.

The people at AAI were all so helpful! They take excellent care of the animals and are doing a great job of preparing them for life in their forever homes. We are so happy with the little guy we adopted. Cannot suggest them highly enough.
I couldn't be more happy with my experience at Animal Aid PDX. It is very clear that they care deeply about all of the animals that come through their doors, and they make sure each one is placed in the best possible home. I adopted two kittens from them. Both were spayed, microchipped, potty trained, and fully vaccinated, plus they gave me some toys, litter, and food to get started. The whole experience was fantastic. If you don't use their services, at least consider donating!
Joe was amazing to work with throughout the whole process, I am a first time pet owner and he answered all of my questions quickly and kindly. If I ever decide to adopt a second cat, I'll definitely be coming back here! I couldn't be happier with the sweet girl I brought home.
Very poor staff. I just lost my best friend of 13 years last night. Went in to look at cats available online. There is NOTHING posted on their website stating adoptions can take up to a week!!! Are you kidding me??? So many pets need good homes. This place SHOULD be able to ACCEPT and ADOPT animals the same day!!! Will NEVER return nor recommend
It's clear that the people at Animal Aid are highly invested in each pet they care for. The thorough application process shows that they're not just looking to put animals in any home; they're looking for the right home that will keep them from returning to the shelter system. They also tailor their care to each pet's individual needs. For example, the cat I adopted doesn't like having other animals around, so they put her in a solo foster home where she would be most comfortable. I will add that I was impressed by the foster they worked with, who was just as informative as the shelter staff.
They are a truly great organization that takes excellent care of the animals they serve. I feel so lucky to have found them and my new family member! Would highly recommend adopting from this essential service of our community.
I'm very grateful for this organization, the caring staff, and all of the volunteers. The cats are incredibly well-taken care of; great mission, vision, and values. I've learned so much compassion and non-attachment from serving here for over 4 years.
I adopted my kitty Jiji from Animal Aid last summer. I was impressed with the care and love they show to the Cats in their care. Animal Aid commits to the animals for live and strives to place them in the best homes. They also have a legion of volunteers to care, pet and play with the animals in the shelter which makes the cats happier and better adjusted for their stay. They are constantly monitoring the well being of the cats and adjusting which rooms they live in. You can come in and get to know the cats who are roaming in various rooms. They check references so don't expect to leave with an animal the moment you meet one. This can be a 20 year commitment and my experience that the process helped finding a wonderful fit for both my Kitty and my family.
I adopted my dog Leo, aka, The Potato, through Animal Aid. They were always courteous, kind and respectful. During the adoption process, they always had the best interests of everyone in mind, making sure that things went as smoothly as possible as he acclimated to my home. He's a bit of a quirky guy and we encountered a few hiccups initially. Animal Aid was always available to help smooth out any issues. Highly recommended group.
This is a wonderful organization. The animals are well cared for and the adoption process is thorough. The volunteers’ commitment is impressive. I love my new adopted kitty.
