What is Hospice & Palliative Care?

When traditional, curative measures have been exhausted in the medical treatment of an individual’s disease diagnosis, your doctor may want to refer you for hospice care. Contrary to what some people think when they hear the term ‘Hospice Care,” the Hospice philosophy is not to focus on dying, but rather a philosophy of embracing ones condition through a care plan of pain management, while promoting a full and meaningful life.

Palliative care is the combination of kindhearted treatments intended to comfort and support individuals and families who are living with a serious illness. The goal is to manage symptoms, talk about the goals of care, provide education to the caregiver, and coordinate physical, psychosocial and spiritual support services.
What is the difference between hospice and palliative care?

Hospice care is provided to patients who have a serious illness and have been given a prognosis of six months or less to live.

Palliative care

consultations are provided to anyone who is experiencing difficulty with pain and symptoms, related to a serious illness.

Palliative care consultations are provided by registered nurse practitioners and physicians.

Hospice care

is provided by a team of nurses, hospice aides, social workers, physicians, chaplains, grief counselors and volunteers.

Palliative care

consultations may be provided to patients who are undergoing active curative treatment for their illness.
