Situated in the heart of New Orleans' historic 7th Ward district, Artist Journey Allen Gallery Studio strives to build community and empower its members through its consistent provision of creative opportunities. Simply stated, Artist Journey Allen is more than JUST a gallery or painting studio. In addition to exhibiting artwork by local artists and hosting public paint and sip sessions throughout the week, AJA Gallery Studio is further developing its intention to provide a platform for under-served youth (as well as others) who are interested in exploring the gift of creativity through art classes and exploratory workshops.
With plans for upcoming events such as poetry nights, local arts markets and jazz and gospel brunch pop ups, Artist Journey Allen Gallery Studio desires to link its culture to that of its neighbors along the Bayou Road African American Heritage Corridor. "I grew up in this community...2509 Bayou Road to be exact," says Journey Allen. "As a result of this connection, I possess the ability to recall it in the splendor of what it once was while contributing to the imaginations of what it has the potential to become. In this way, Artist Journey Allen Gallery Studio becomes a vehicle by which I can build community one brush stroke at a time."
In terms of the artist showcased at the gallery, originator of the NOLA Night Light, Artist Journey Allen creates works that vibrantly capture the exuberant aspects of New Orleans indigenous African American musical culture. With her signature abstract design acting as the backdrop to many of her works, the artist strives to create a sense of movement, rhythm and joy within each piece as these characteristics are often discovered during improv musical performances of second line, jazz, and buck jump music rendered in New Orleans local African American communities.
