Delighted to find that this old Boston staple has reinvented itself in an adorable barn not far from Portsmouth NH. Great selection of books, awesome for browsing through. Stop in, you won't regret it.
Avenue Victor Hugo was one of my favorite college haunts in its old location in Newbury Street in the 90s, and it is wonderful to be able to spend time browsing the shelves again. Blue the cat is no longer around, but the location in a charming red barn adds to the ambiance and the characteristic decor in hand-drawn signs. 20,000 books to make a rainy day interesting. What more can one ask? Inventory tracked on their website if you are feeling lazy.
The perfect bookstore. ...Quirky and full of literary nostalgia, an eclectic and well stocked selection, with mementos and artifacts from bygone eras scattered throughout, It has it all.
Although I have not been to the physical location, I did order a book from their website and had it shipped to me I live across the country from their location. It was a book first edition, btw, signed by the author, who also happens to be my great-great-great uncle. So thrilled I was able to find this bookstore online, and so lucky the book was a ridiculously reasonable price as well. Having this book means so much to me--and provides me with a tangible connection to a family member I would never be able to meet. I received timely email updates about my payment being received, processed, and book shipped, and had no issues whatsoever and this all happened around Christmas time. All their book prices seem very fair and fitting to the conditions/editions of the books. Many of the books have very detailed descriptions regarding conditional flaws or defects, or explanations about the publisher or specific printing, etc. Very, very happy customer.
I am seasonal at a nearby campground and my 9 year old son and I stopped at this book store. We had a great time exploring. I found 2 books that I am so excited to read and my son found one as well. I am also an early childhood educator and I found a couple of books that are perfect for my classes too! Will definitely be visiting again.
Such a delightful place with an extraordinary selection of books. The owner, Vincent, is a real pleasure to visit with and he'll help you navigate the collection of 20k+ books. I happily lost track of time searching for interesting reads and had much better luck here than I did in Northampton MA, which has a dozen or so used book stores. I'd been searching for books on tea and Hungarian history, specifically Budapest. Obscure subjects, so I was very surprised to find books on both. What's more, one of the books I purchased, Budapest 1900, referenced author Victor Hugo on page 1. What are the odds? No, really...I am asking.
It is always such a treat to visit this wonderful bookstore! We never leave empty handed. We are so thankful for a unique place to find our next stack of books to dive in to!
This is such a gem of a place. Covering all topics of literature. Including an area of old magazines. It's worth stopping in just to stroll the isles and take in the collection. In our case we bought a few books. But don't think you have to be a book nerd to enjoy going through the shop. And make sure to watch your step from the first entry area, to the step down of the rest of the shop!
Love this bookstore! This is my 3rd visit and I plan to go again. We went for one of their sales this weekend and snagged a lot of old, unique, adorable books! Worth visiting for sure!
Fantastic selection, great ambiance. Definitely worth a visit and a long browse!
