Front-desk and pickup folks were kind and helpful. Confusion when picking up the vehicle and when leaving the Avis Parking lot. -- Inside of car smelled of perfume and cigarette smoke. -- Inside not clean. -- Message on dashboard claimed car needed maintenance. -- Left plastic trimming on outside left of car was loose -- Backseats were down. Please pay more attention to quality in the small things in the future and have pride in providing a good service.
Not happy with the car cleanliness and overall mechanical condition. strange noise from the rear wheel area. 1 counter person on the return to Newark international at 5:30 am and she didn't seem to want to be there either. 38 minutes from dropping the car off to getting a receipt. Be sure to get a receipt. Avis has shown me still in rental, even AFTER I have returned the car and rented another one back in my home state from Avis. Really poor experience right from the start. We waited 45mins to collect a prebooked car. The queue was really slow moving, definitely not enough staff on the counter as we waited ages. We were then given a smaller car than we booked which was a pain as we were three adults with three large suitcases so we had to squeeze everything in. The car overwhelmingly stank of pot which gave us all headaches. The car was also dirty inside as there were stains over the seats. Also we were told the keys were in the car but after looking for ages we soon found them stuffed down the side on the passenger seat and the centre console shown in photo. We made a prior agreement to return the car with a full tank which we did but were then still charged a fuel surcharge which we then had to stand in the slow queue again to query this and get this removed. The person who removed this was happy to help. After this experience we are unlikely to use or recommend Avis in Newark.
Had a wonderful road trip to Niagara Fall, Washington DC, New Haven with Avis’s car. Condition of the car is excellent and returning was hassle-free. Thank you for the advise when we are receiving our car so that our trip can be so smooth. Thank you so much.
I returned the vehicle full was charged $17.90 fuel charge. Thank God I took videos before and after I picked up the vehicle. Had the employees in the return section not been too busy chatting maybe they would have noticed the vehicle was returned full. Oh and by the way I returned Saturday and they closed the rental agreement Monday morning resulting in an additional charge of $75. What is going on here? I returned at 6:48 p.m. have time stamped videoand location and was due at 8:40 p.m.
I prepaid for a 3-day rental. The vehicle provided at the Newark airport was in terrible condition. The floor carpet was untucked and just laying loosely on the front floorboards. The front tires were balding and howled on the highway. The upholstery in the rear passenger area was cut. The front fascia was loose. And the vehicle was provided with less than 1/2 a tank of fuel - which I didn't catch, so I filled it up prior to return. Normally I have a good experience with AVIS, but not here. Prepayment was $50 more than the rental fee, but of course, no refund for overpayment. I should have checked all of this before leaving the rental center, but I was in a hurry and trusted AVIS. Needless to say, that trust is now lost. Update on 9/12: I did get a reply from Avis requesting additional information, which I provided, and I'm waiting to hear back from them. Update: Although the initial response from AVIS was a templated apology, they did follow up and address my concerns.
Best rental experience I’ve ever had and I have rented a few hundred times! Fast, efficient and easy. No standing in line to sign a stack of papers. Received a text message with instructions/location and went directly to the vehicle. Showed license and scanned QR at the exit gate. Return was fast and east. Friendly service with a smile. I wish all companies were this efficient. I will definitely rent with Avis again.
I won’t be renting with AVIS again. It took me over an hour to get my rental when I arrived. When I got the car, the tire pressure on all but one of the tires was way too low so when I ended up hitting a pothole, the tire blew. It took AVIS’s roadside assistance so long to try and get someone to me to change the tire, a cop came by and called the local roadside assistance for me before AVIS could even find anyone. After I got the spare I had to go put air in all the tires myself. Also, the toll box in the car was faulty. I was told to keep the box closed when I go through tolls so it wouldn’t scan at toll booths and I would have to pay cash, but almost every toll booth I went through, it got scanned with the box still closed. So be prepared to have to call customer service to get your money back for any tolls you incur while you have the car. I honestly wish I spent the extra money to use Hertz or Enterprise instead. If you can avoid it, I would use a different rental car service.
Friendly and helpful staff. Cars could use a bit more maintenance. The pickup I got had completely bald tires.
I have the following 3 instances of dissatisfaction with my most recent car rental experience with Avis at the Newark Airport in New Jersey. On the day when we picked up the rental car, we experienced two incidents of poor service: 1. At the counter when we picked up the car, the customer service rep that assisted us was talking to a friend on her cell phone the entire time she was assisting us. I find this extremely rude. 2. When we tried to leave the parking lot at approximately 10pm, the gate attendant left the booth without saying anything to us. There were about 7 cars behind me, all trying to leave the parking lot. I caught up to her and asked whether we should exit via another gate. She simply replied that we should wait at the same place and her manager would come to man the booth. We waited 7 minutes before someone came to man the booth before we can leave the parking lot. 3. The car we received had the headlights pointed nearly at the ground. The headlights did NOT illuminate farther than 20 feet in front of the car. This made driving at night on country roads where there were NO street lights extremely hazardous. I could not read street signs or see any roads and obstacles beyond 20 feet. I have never had this issue with any rental cars I've ever rented before. This is by far, the worse experiences I've encountered with any rental car companies at any airport. I'd like to think this is an isolated incident because I've rented from Avis before not at EWR and did not have any of these issues.
