Avondale Branch Library

Story

At the turn of the 20th century, Andrew Carnegie, the industrialist and philanthropist, donated $10,000 to the city of Avondale to build a library. The beautiful building lasted 50 years, at which time the City of Birmingham and the library board recognized the need for a new building. The new library was built in 1961 complete with air-conditioning and increased space. In 1982, the city used bonds funds for an expansion and renovation that transformed Avondale into a regional branch for the southern area of the city. In 2005, the library closed again for renovations and refurbishing. For nearly one hundred years, the Avondale Regional Library has served the Birmingham community. In this new millennium, the staff, the board and the administration are committed to expanding and improving this library’s excellent resources and services.
