It use to be a great school. Great curriculum that is challenging. However, they are constantly changing principals and workers. My son was bullied punched and choked inside classrooms without the teachers even knowing. I had many emails and conversations with teacherss and the head of the school. Their go to was always an excuse to why they didn't see or weren't looking and my favorite excuse was boys will be boys attitude. Don't put your kids in here for the curriculum it's not worth it. They have created an environment were bullies are excused as long as they say they were just playing. They do not teach personal boundaries or respect. Look elsewhere. But if your only requirement for a good school is an advanced curriculum and not an environment were your child can flourish than by all means go here you and your children will like it.
My son LOVES this school. It is our first year here and we absolutely love the way in which we have seen growth in our child since attending. The teachers are kind, not like traditional schools where they are burn't out, they want our kids to succeed. The administration is phenomenal and we appreciated the fact that they worked through a few personnel changes before finding the best fit. Definitely BPC fans!!!
Great school! I have 2 kids attending who have finished one year. They learned alot and made some great friends. The atmosphere is terrific, and they love and encourage the children. The homework is a consistant, predictable, and managable amount. Far less than I was expecting, given their reputation. After a bad experience at another school, my son was so fortunate to have the teacher he did last year. She was beyond all expectations, kind, patient, understanding and seemed to genuinely care about him. The administration is responsive and always willing to discuss issues. My only criticism is it seems to have alot of turnover and the young administrators would, in my view, benefit from some more life experience as I feel some of their decissions lack wisdom and forsight. But overall it is a wonderful place to send the kids!
We have two children in the school, and have been in many schools in multiple states, by far this is the best school. The teachers and admin staff and wonderful and foster an environment where kids can learn in a safe and inclusive environment. Curriculum aside, the teachers at BASIS PHOENIX CENTRAL, have inculcated in my children a keen sense inquisitiveness.
I didn’t have a good experience with registration. First, I was informed that my daughter was accepted. At that time, she had also been accepted at another school. Since I believed Basis was the better option, I cancelled the other application. Then, my daughter went in for a screening for early k. I was told that this was to check if she was ready. Unfortunately, I got an email a week later informing me that they didn’t believe she was ready. I called them to get more information since I did believe she was ready. The lady i spoke to was not very helpful. She told me that she didn’t have any specific information in front of her but agreed to email me. I agreed to that. I never received anything back. My daughter was so excited about going to school that when I told her, she was heartbroken. Also, I wasn’t able to get her into the other school because the spot had been taken. Thankfully, I found a great Montessori school, which I m sure she is gonna love. Ive heard other issues from parents that were thinking about sending their children here. Therefore, i will also be withdrawing my sons application.
Not a fan... High teacher and administrator turnover 3 different "Heads of School" and 2 teacher resignations in 4 months. "100% college bound graduation rate" is misleading and overblown - all students are expected to pass AP exams before graduation i.e. they all graduate with college credit already. "Closed Campus" is a little too nontransparent for a school that expects parents to be "boosters" and "donate" to help fund a school which is a publicly funded charter school to begin with... very odd and opaque. One redeeming factor was my son liked a few of his teachers. MOST of them knew their stuff, cared, and expected him to perform at a high standard, which I loved... But the business model and leadership need some work...
Most ppl don't like challenges at 5th grade but the early the challenge the more experienced that is why most of kids dropped out from collage. I wish all schools in this nation have the same curiosity. I meet many kids in math classes in collage they don't even do fractions. All school supposed to be like BASIS in order to achieve kids future. I like it.
Teachers an administration who refuse to acknowledge what emotional impact they have had on a child SHOULD not be around children. Basis you are running a school with children, not a corporation with adults. Oh wait, that is your main goal. I was so blind by their amazing curriculum and forgot what these schools are actually about. Biggest mistake of my life.
I suggest not listening to the reviews made by parents with children below grades 5. Since their children are not exposed to the administrators and the immense amount of homework later on in the grades. The teachers, I would say are perfectly fine, homework is not their fault to be honest, just following a curriculum. Mr. Wharton, Mr. Chandler, and Mrs. Watson, were phenomenal teachers, and I respect them a lot. The part of this school that made me feel like I was in, well, prison, were the administrators. They treated most people pretty badly, and punishments for actions, were extremely out of proportion. Not all of the administrators were rude, people like Ms. Davis, or Dr. Bright. The fact that there were chains separating people from the 4th floor which made sense, for the fact that the 4th floor was not allowed to enter, but the scenery for not being allowed to enter, made people feel like if they did, they'd be arrested. There are security cameras ALL over the place, like you're constantly being watched. Really bad atmosphere, just doesn't feel right. It feels unbelievably isolated in that school, such a small building with so many students. My first year at basis was okay, but my second was too bad, and I had to leave. A lot of homework isn't always bad, but when you add it up, with NO physical education, it really takes a toll on you and your state of mind. 6th grade did have P.E., Which was okay, except for the fact that we were punished one day for a few people talking too much, and then the teacher thought, "well that means I have to punish every single person in the class". And we were forced to write a page long essay, for the rest of the P.E. class. Then in 7th grade, we didn't have P.E. at all. Nothing at all. The closest we had to P.E., was recess, which lasted 15 minutes. AND, the P.E. area, is a parking lot with fake grass attached to the floor. Taking an F.B.I building, and trying to turn it into a school, is like trying to build a full wooden nicely constructed house, with chopsticks. It's too hard, with the fact that the advertisement went overboard, so many kids and parents were exposed to this school. Which isn't bad, advertising is advertising, but the school went from like 300 kids to 900 kids. An abnormal amount for a school like this. And the fact that it's K-12, in one building, is mind boggling on how they thought they could possibly work it out. Highschool students, in the same building as kindergarten students, is just chaos. And yeah yeah, they're in different hallways and different classrooms, but at some point, their paths will collide, as in lunch rooms, and recess areas. There was an after school system, which was okay, but some of the people running it were really lazy, and pretty much didn't care. There's a lot of specific things wrong with the school, that I'd have to write a full book to explain entirely. Overall, the part that incredibly bothered me were the main administrators. Like I said, Ms. Davis and Dr. Bright are fantastic administrators, and they actually had common sense. Mrs. Elisco and Mrs. Saspe, pretty much scared everyone, and looked like police officers walking around the hallways. A quick point I'd like to make, is that the security is actually pretty much useless. At the fact, that 3 KIDS ran away from the school by literally exiting the front door. How pathetic. There's so much more, that I can't think of from the top of my head, since there were a lot of flaws in this school. What I'm asking from new parents looking at my review, please take this seriously, and take it into account. This review is coming from ME, a STUDENT, I experienced the later parts of the school, and actually know what I'm talking about, the people writing these reviews, either had kids that are only in kindergarten to 3rd grade, or didn't take the time to actually think about their review. Parents, if you seriously want to take your kid to a good school, but you can't find one, I'd definitely say this is the last resort. Thanks, and goodbye.
An excellent school with teachers that are dedicated to improve children's learning capacity. Love the extracurricular activities as well!
