I went to see Dr. Maxine Bauer to check for fibroids and she ended up shaming me for my weight, going as far to point at my stomach and say “look at those stretch marks” to her resident/intern/nurse ?. I’ve seen another review recounting a similar situation which tells me that Maxine is a bully. Anyone going to the ob/gyn is already in a vulnerable position and she just has a tendency to make it worse. Instead of getting to the bottom of my abdominal pain, she recommended Weight Watchers which was not a viable solution. I ended up going to see other doctors down the line who helped me get diagnosed for Hashimoto’s Disease, which inevitably causes weight gain. How many patients has Maxine bullied instead of helping? Instead of using her education and expertise to guide her patients down the path of identifying the root of their illness or pain almost always hormone related, she weight shames us. Whether it’s a lack of education or lack of compassion, I still think she should reconsider her career in this field.
Dr. Bauer was very cold in her bedside manner. She then latched on to my weight as an issue and gave me unsolicited diet and exercise advice in a very judgemental manner. As someone recovering from bulimia, this was very hurtful to me. I started crying after the comment of diet and exercise became a lecture. She told me walking won’t cut it. I stood up for myself, and the resident who was observing Dr. Bauer told me “Good job standing up for yourself!” which made me feel a little better as I left. Needless to say, I will not be seeing Dr. Bauer again. If you need someone who is body-positive, don’t see her.
Bauer is a lovely doctor. She was always kind and sincere. I saw her more often than my primary OB. Bauer is easy to talk to any always attentive. I highly recommend her!
