The pig ear and the sausage sandwiches are AWESOME! The history here is very rich but also sad. Come for the food and you won't be disappointed at all. You'll only wish you could eat more. The city of Jackson itself is a pathetic place but it totally deserves it. Such a history of racism that will sadly never die.
You might be confused and think this is a place to stay, but it's a place to eat lol. Just one of the wonderful things about Jackson. Big apple inn has history and flavors worth checking out. It's worth a try to get you something truly southern. Get you some sliders
On my home passing through Jackson MS, I had to stop and try Big Apple Inn’s pig ears sandwiches. I first came known to Big Apple Inn on the Anthony Bourdain show, he stopped in and ate there. If you really want to experience the pass and culture Big Apple Inn is it. The looked of the inside has history and character along with food. The pig ears are something different at first but after the first one, there is an after taste that kicks in and you fine yourself order another or 3 more. Good food does that, it lingers on and you develop an palate.
Wonderful people are the first thing you’ll encounter when visiting Big Apple Inn. The exterior brings you back to the days of yesteryear as does the interior. The grill is busy and the crowd eager. Don’t be afraid to order the pig ear with your choice of heat I went with hot. The idea of eating pig’s ear might be daunting for some but take the plunge as the reward is worth it. Fatty, meaty, dressed perfectly this is a small slider that will stick to your memory. Easily one of the best things I’ve eaten and it comes with a slice of history as Jackson doesn’t hide the past with glossy makeovers. I’ll be back again and again. Enjoy!
Ever had a Pig Ear sandwich? Me neither until I went here!! It's a little hole in the wall, would've never known it was here. I ordered 2 sandwiches and it was a winner!! Stacked with flavor and the ear wasn't chewy at all. Would eat it again!
Order was prepared incorretly & the I could hear the older worker telling the cook that I probably "didn't say I wanted cheese added" the gentleman that took order told her I "did" ask for it and that it was his error. Didn't appreciate her saying & talking as is she wanted me to hear so I told her I did say it. Maybe she didn't hear me because she was "sitting down watching TV and didn't get up until line was backed up".
Awesome restaurant and food including the staff!! If you ever in town please go by and indulge yourself and family. Historical place where civil rights leaders met and ate.
Big Mama was the highlight of my visit. The food was alright but the store itself was a real charm and watching these dedicated women do what they do was a real joy. Get the Hot Smoke with Slop.
Always remember, “It ain’t pork without mustard!” Had to come to the new S Frontage Rd AutoZone hub store to get boots and clips for the brake job I’m doing ’cause the Yazoo store didn’t have ’em and besides perfect EXCUSE to have lunch at The Big Apple Inn! All true blues lovers and history scholars should make the short trip to Medgar Evers’ first field office location and get some EXCELLENT eats!
Big Apple Inn is what I would call "a hole in the wall" serving up sliders. Simple, straight-forward menu. The sliders are called smokes and consist of hot or mild link sausage that's ground up and then sauteed on a flat grill and served with Cole slaw. They also have pig ear sandwiches. I tried a hot, mild, and pig ear because when my friends rave about a place I like to give it a fair shot b/c I love food. But there was nothing special here. Staff was very friendly though. The meat to bread ratio of these sliders left something to be desired. And I just wasnt feeling the pig ear. I didnt think I would, but it's not every day you get a pig ear slider so I had to try it. I think it would've been better if it was a fried pig ear on the slider. The Red Apple Inn was also the only business I noticed in a somewhat desolate and abandoned historic looking area. It seemed to be popular tho b/c several other folks came in while we were waiting for our order. We had interesting convo in line with some folks about what it may take to revitalize Jackson's once booming historic areas. I hope that day comes. Glad I tried it, but I'll probably check out other places next time I visit.
