Great climbing and friendly staff! Much more climbing than I was expecting. The routes were very well set and there was a wide variety of grades with a lot of boulders of each grade too. I’ll definitely visit again next time I’m in town.
This is a really good gym, especially for people who are serious about climbing. I find the climbing to be set harder than the other gym I go to but every time I come here, I see a decent group regulars who climb in the V2-V6 range who are better and better at climbing every time! I'm actually really impressed, because I can't say that for the regulars at the other gym. If you're new to climbing, they have climbs for people at all levels.
Great bouldering gym. Definitely my favorite in the area, and when my friends come from out of town I take them here. Routes are diverse and interesting and they trade out their routes often. I love their yoga classes some of them are HARD: schedule is on their website. Very friendly people and staff in general.
I just moved to the Phoenix area and looking for a new bouldering gym. I realized my previous gym set a high standard that Black Rock Bouldering Gym sadly did not live up to. The sets seemed fun but grades seemed inconsistent with flashable V3/V4 but then couldn't get many V2s because the holds were slick from all the traffic especially the feet, could barely tell the color of the hold from all the rubber. For me, I would end up paying more for Black Rock than my previous gym with an overall drop in quality of holds and setting.
The best bouldering gym in town just got better! *edited* I went to BRBG for over a year and it was one of the best I've ever been too. The staff are friendly and helpful. Regulars and advanced climbers were never "too good" to help out beginners and the facility was fantastic. They just unveiled the renovations and there is a whole second side with more walls, a training area and a moon board. They also have yoga classes throughout the week and a 1 hour boot camp class called Ninja Fit. Come and visit for yourself!
Excellent facility with even better staff. Black rock is an entirely bouldering focused facility with a wide variety of problems that regularly rotate. The setters do a great job setting different styles and the overall rotation schedule means that you have enough time to work your projects but there are always new problems to try as well. Classes are offered as part of the membership and I have enjoyed both the yoga and fitness classes. Black Rock also has an excellent training space which includes squat racks / benches, dumbbells, hangboards, campus ladder, pegboard, and a moon board. There are several climbing gyms in the area but if you enjoy bouldering this is definitely the best choice.
Super friendly staff as always. So many climbing routes to choose from. Comfy seating area to work a little from your laptop if needed. Just wish they, or any climbing gym for that matter, were closer to Central Phoenix. Not a quick public transit way to get to any of the gyms. With UA, ASU, Phoenix Community College, the rich private high schools and public high schools on or near Central, a growing young professionals population - there is a hot bed of potential for a gym in CenPho area.
New to town & checked out black rock first, I don’t do much rope climbing. Went during lunchtime, so I had most of the gym to myself. This made it feel even bigger than it already is. Impressive amount of routes & a fantastic variety. Some are outrageously long on “the beast”…I think they are “Yosemite grade”? Whatever they are, they take a lot of endurance. Personally really enjoyed the sections without grades just numbered…what a cool way to get feedback from the community to the setters. PLEASE keep those around! Overall awesome gym & from the few people I saw, filled with great people. Peter at check in was friendly. I’ll likely purchase a membership after my punch cards run out!
I started bouldering here about 7 months ago. I am quite short so naturally climbing is more difficult for me than for someone taller, but it feels worse here than at other gyms. As far as I know, the routesetters are all men that are average height or taller, and as a 5’2” woman there are many climbs that are within my grade range but feel way harder or impossible due to my height. After climbing at other gyms with more diverse setting teams I find BR to just be a bit limited and exclusionary in their setting style. I want to keep climbing here because I love the community but it gets demoralizing.
Great bouldering and great people! I randomly decided to try out climbing and made this my first stop. From there, I visited a few others in the Valley and made my way right back to BRBG to sign up for a membership. Friendly staff, knowledgeable coaches, lots of wall space, and friendly members. If you have any interest in trying out bouldering, this is where you should go!
