Our president/CEO Mauricio Campos (Contramestre Gringo) was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil and moved to Houston in 1990. He is the President and Founder of the Brazilian Arts Foundation, a non-profit organization founded in 2001 to promote and share the Brazilian culture in the Houston area.
Mr. Campos, a native of Brazil, has over twenty-two years of experience in promoting sports and arts worldwide and that foundation led to his training in Capoeira in early 1997. His dedication and natural aptitude to martial arts led him to receive the title of “monitor” in 1998, which allowed him to start his teaching program in the Houston area. Through the Brazilian Arts Foundation, Mr. Campos teaches classes in Capoeira, music, percussion and folkloric dances. He is also responsible for organizing monthly and quarterly events, community partnerships, workshops, and special annual events such as the Houston Brazilian Festival.
Mr. Campos leads multiple programs throughout the Houston area such as the Wesley Community Center Senior Arts Program, Rice University Capoeira Program, music program, kids summer camps, special residencies and, along with his very capable staff, supervises all the daily administrative and operation tasks of the organization.
Today, in addition to providing classes in Capoeira, Maculele, Music, Portuguese, and Samba, The Brazilian Arts Foundation performs at numerous events, festivals, and educational institutions throughout the year including Bayou City Arts Festival, Tapestry of World Dance, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston International Festival, and University of Houston.
