Burns Commons

Story

Burns Commons is a park in the Milwaukee County Parks system. It is located on the East Side of the city, bound by Franklin St., Prospect Pl. and Ogden Ave. It is split into two sections by Knapp Street. The larger, northern section is landscaped with trees, lawn and walkways, and includes public art. The smaller southern portion holds a statue of Scottish poet Robert Burns.HistoryIn 1847, developer James H. Rogers donated the land to the city, making it one of Milwaukee’s earliest parks. At the time it was named First Ward Park. It was later named Franklin Square. As stately homes were built around the park, four of the neighboring homeowners took on its upkeep. They provided landscaping and built a fountain. By the turn of the century, the park was known as Baby Park, since the nursemaids in the affluent neighborhood took their charges to the pleasant park.In 1909 a statue of Robert Burns was donated by Scottish immigrant James Anderson Bryden and erected on the south end of the park. Its dedication was on June 26, 1909. The bronze statue, set on a plinth of Nova Scotia granite, was designed by Scottish sculptor William Grant Stevenson. In 1937, the parks of the city and of the county of Milwaukee were consolidated into the Milwaukee County Parks system. At that time, the park became known as Robert Burns Triangle. This was not official, however, since a deed restriction required the name to be kept Franklin Square. In 1994 the restriction was removed, and the park was officially renamed.

Nice park with a Hop connection right there. Be aware that there is an aggressive homeless population that congregates here. Stay alert.
Beautiful little park with plenty of benches. Previously known as First Ward Triangle, Franklin Square, and Baby's Park. Dedicated to Robert BurnsScottish poet and lyricist, author of "Auld Lang Syne" in 1909 by Milwaukee mayor David Rose. A statue stands on the southern end in his honor. The sculpture focused in the center of circular walkway is called Cleopatra's Wedge by Beverly Pepper circa 1991.
Sometimes Cooper's hawks from the very nearby Oak Leaf Trail will be seen perching in the trees in this small park.
Great place to walk your dog, get on the hop.
Small park but enough green space to enjoy a sunny afternoon with friends playing frisbee, bags or sitting around and having a few drinks. Right next to the park is the line end for the hop.
Excellent outdoor place to come, walk your dog, or play games in the grass. This small park is great for hammocks, studying or hanging out if your within walking distance.
A lovely Milwaukee County park found on Milwaukee's Eastside. A terminal end for Milwaukee's Street Car System known as the HOP you will find yourself steps from Lake Michigan, unique boutiques, fabulous restaurants, and the friendliest neighborhood around. Great times and Great people.
Wonderful! Me and my Partner took the Trolly from the Intermodal Station here, and had a blast. And, me and a friend met an old acquaintance there a few days later. This is a great place, with a great transport station to go with it!
A great little piece of green space in the City of Milwaukee with a Scottish history and one of the best statues of Robert Burns in the world.
Last stop on the HOP rail. Close to the lake
