Cambridge Public Library

About

The Cambridge Public Library had its origins in the Cambridge Athenaeum, incorporated in 1849, for the purpose of establishing a lyceum, public library, and reading room.

Story

The Cambridge Public Library serves as a doorway to opportunity, self-development and recreation for all its residents, and as a forum where they may share ideas, cultures and resources among themselves and with people around the globe. The free availability of information, the lively interaction of people, and the open exchange of ideas animate and extend the democratic mission of the library.

The library is a dynamic, community-oriented system providing excellent services, collections and programs to all members of the community. We are dedicated to affording the people of Cambridge resources for recreational reading, independent learning, and the introduction of children to the world of literacy and learning.

The Cambridge Public Library is designed to work as a unified system with a strong main library and six active branch libraries each tailored to the unique constituencies and needs of its immediate neighborhood.

"Since 1889, the Cambridge Public Library has been a vibrant place of learning and community where all are welcome to expand their horizons. Through the Main Library and six neighborhood branches, the Library operates as a unified system to offer free library services and programs to residents. The Library’s mission is to welcome all, inspire minds and empower community."

My library the Cambridge Main Library is outstanding and filled with great wonderful Souls. Of course my very enzyme Librarians everyone's individual there at the library we have snack machines yeah we also have the privilege pandemic permitting of bringing it out on food to munch on whether it's from a pizza shop or I'm home we are most certainly welcome to enjoy something to eat in the right locations of the library. I am so thankful to the wonderful City management that we enjoy in the city of Cambridge particularly in our library
Why work from a co-working space or cafe when this amazing space is available for free! P.S. This is still a library and not your personal workspace. Wish the few people who come here to take their work calls would respect the need for peace and quiet
Beautiful library and awesome activities. Good for kids! Just be cautious about the parking you entered could be the one belongs to the school, if gate shut at night you won’t get your car parked in there.
Gorgeous library but it seems people have forgotten what the hell a library is supposed to w. Had one baby crying/screaming for 20 minutes, another woman talking the entire time she was there, people’s phones going off…I just need a quiet space to study and no where in this library has that. It seems everyone has forgotten their manners since COVID.
Really great library system. I live in Boston, and borrow books from both Boston and Cambridge public libraries. Though BPL is presumably among the best in the world, about 1/3 of the time Cambridge library system will have an obscure older book that Boston won't. Smaller suburban branches of Cambridge public library harbor amazing old stuff.
A perfect venue to sit and study! Went with my friend as she finished up her finals; found a nice table on the second floor with a view of the entire street. Plenty of seating options and study areas, and a very peaceful atmosphere! The building is close to a playground and a market if one has kids or wants to take a break from studying for a snack!
*Edit Coming here for three weeks and no problems with me having a backpack and messenger bag for my laptop. Now all of a sudden one particular employee decides to pick on me because I apparently look "homeless". Really? What is this world coming to? I spend maybe 2 hrs a day there to charge my devices and use the Wi-Fi to look for work. Kept to myself, never bothered anyone, but apparently I look like a bum dyke and that is against the rules. Have video of the old prick, smug as can be telling me he is the only manager on duty after asking to talk to a superior and if I did not leave he was going to waste the police time by having them come and escort me out. Since this place is going to discriminate, I can no longer recommend. Shame. Up until this incident my experience here was swell. But long behold there is always that one bad apple. One star. Original review Can't think of anything to fault this place on. One of the best libraries I have ever been to. Amazing selection of books and movies. Lots of quite areas to study or just relax and enjoy the free WiFi. Bathrooms are clean and staff are very polite.
Greatest Library ever built,,,wonderful and very friendly staff at the front desk,,,,great selection of DVD s. and Book,,,, A BEAUTIFUL GLASS BUILDING ON THE SITE OF THE CAMBRIDGE PLAYGROUND and PARK FOR EVERYONE,,,THE LIBRARY is a CAMBRIDGE LANDMARK IN A HISTORICAL NEIGHBORHOOD,,,,,I GIVE THE CAMBRIDGE PUBLIC LIBRARY 10 gold stars
Nice spot to go and study with plenty of desks and chairs and tons of light to keep it from having the traditional dark and dank library vibe.
Thank you Safana for going above and beyond to help me and take away all the worry ! Thank you so much to this library for all the unbiased aide for all.
